"Do you like it?"

'It's beautiful.'

A gleam caught my eye, though whether it was from her extravagant dress or her delighted face, I wasn't certain. Her disappointed sigh blew that all away.

"Too bad my date canceled and now I can't even go to prom," she whined, child-like, through pouted lips.

'You can go next year,' I assured her, 'even without a date. And you can show everyone how beautiful you look.'

She shrugged, only slightly reassured though never fully depressed about it to begin with. "I guess." And she twirled a bit more in her dress, looking at herself from all possible angles, craning her neck at unrealistic angles creating a figure she would never truly use in person. "All dressed up and nowhere to go."

"Honey, it's dinner time!" her mother called from downstairs.

"Coming!" She turned back to me, urgent to look respectable for such a casual occurrence, yet still unable to tear her eyes from me within her swirling fabric. "Sorry, I was just trying on my dress. I love it, I can't stop looking at it in the mirror!"
