Prologue

'Yay' I mumble sarcastically as my alarm goes off. Justin Bieber sings sweetly underneath my pillow as I reach to turn it off. I climb awkwardly out of bed, trying not to wake up my sister, trudge down the corridor and into the bathroom.

I notice my reflection in the mirror. I look like a train wreck. Uhh. I quickly fix myself up, get changed into my fresh, clean smelling school uniform and join my dad in the kitchen.

"Morning" I say still half asleep.

"Hey darl, i'm making you breakfast."

I groan.

"I don't want anything."

"You need something to eat before school."

He says this all the time. 'You need brain food to concentrate in your lessons'.

"But i'm not hungry." It's true. I am never hungry before school, and then by lunch i'm like a ravenous pig. "I'll just have tea."

He gives me a frown and then gives in. "Ok, what do you want?"

"Umm, peppermint please." I put on an innocent smile and head for the living room.

The stone cold wood burns the soles of my feet. It sends a shiver down my spine. I sit down at the piano and trace the edges of the keys. My cold finger tips sore from the icy air. I play my favourite piece. 'I giorni' by Ludovico Einaudi, when Emily walks in.

I jump off the stool and run towards her. "Hey Em, how was your holiday?"

I realise i'm squeezing her to death so let go.

"Good thanks."

Emily's one of my good friends. She's funny, and a bit dopey sometimes. But just down to earth, and fun to be around.

"Ebony! Your tea's getting cold!"

"Ok!" I sprint to the kitchen drink two sips of my tea and then we're out the door.

We reach halfway down the endless road to school and Em's still chatting about what happened on 'The only way is Essex', but all I can think about is seeing everyone. All my friends. Find out what they've been up to over the never-ending six weeks of summer.

Summer, lush. Now it's freezing cold and not even winter yet. Great.
