Chapter Three
The rest of the week was pretty rubbish. He didn’t notice me at all. It was shocking. I did say hello to him yesterday but he just nodded and walked past me. Lately he seems quite to himself, doesn’t talk to anyone. Not even Ava. Something’s definitely up with him. We still had the plan in place though and I was determined to make him notice me.
French just finished and I had my own plan. I ran down the steps and outside to join everyone. I scanned across the crowd of people just to check he was here.
“Yepp. Right Ok let’s do this. Oh gosh. Please don’t fail,” I say to myself as I walk over to him.
He looks my way and sees me so I pretend to trip and dramatically fall backwards, squeezing my eyes shut to take the pain, when I feel someone’s warm hands gracefully catch me and take me in their arms. I force my eyes open to see Jesse smiling right in my direction. Is he actually smiling at me? Jesse Miller? Me? It felt like I was in some romantic Hollywood movie. I can’t speak and I’m so stunned that my mouth is hanging wide open. Realising what my face is like, I try to pull it straight.
He giggles. Oh great why did I do that. Idiot.
“Are you ok?” Jesse says forcing himself not to laugh.
“Um, yeah, I think so”
He helps me stand up straight and puts his hand round my waist to make certain I’m on balance. His warming touch is so gentle, I can hardly breathe.
“Are you sure you’re fine? You looked a bit stunned before”
I know right.
“Yes, I’m fine”
“So how are you anyway?”
Jesse is asking how I am, really? I must be dreaming.
“Great, how about you?” I choke out, my throats swelling up, I literally can’t breathe now. Seriously.
“Well, I’ve been better that’s for sure.”
There’s an intensity in his voice that makes me believe him.
“It’s nice to see you ebony”
“Yeah, nice to see you too”
The last I see of him is his perfect smile directed at me before he strolls off into the rain.

I pick up the TV remote and flick through the channels happily satisfying myself with Spongebob Squarepants. He’s like the best cartoon character that’s ever been created. Everyone has got to love Spongebob. I mean, come on.
I jump, startled by ‘kiss and tell’ as it rings loudly on my phone. Falling off the sofa with a thump, I reach to see who it is. I answer.
“Hey Scarl- “ she cuts me off midsentence shouting my name down the phone.
“Ebony!”
“Wow, do you want me to go deaf anytime soon or something? Any louder”
“Sorry but I really need to tell you something.”
"Go ahead."
Her voice turns into an exitedly high squeak.
"Jesse broke up with Ava!"
"What!" This can't be true. 'Your lying!"
"I'm not, I swear ask anyone and they'll tell you the same."
"Well what happened then? Tell me the whole story"
"Ok, I don't know the details but anyway I'll tell you what I know."
"Hurry up then."
"Alright, so Jesse and I were talking at home earlier and I asked him why he's been so anti-social and depressed for the past week, and he said that he and Ava had broke up. So I asked why and he told me that he found her cheating on him with another guy. I was like Oh no she didn't."
"No way!"
"Uh huh, I know right I am going to kill her in school. I'm over the moon that they're finally over but its just that no-one does that to my little bro. No-one."
"I hope he's ok."
"Same, I try to cheer him up but he's just still really sad about it."
"Well thanks for telling me anyway."
"That's alright, I had to tell you straight away anyway."
"I gotta go. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Bye."
I really hope Jesse's ok, but on the other hand now I've got my chance.
