Chapter Five

I come up above the water taking in a deep breath of the fresh air. A sun ray shines through the grey clouds and beams upon my face. Just as I begin to soak up the sun, the clouds engulf the light once again.

“Are you jumping in or what?”

I turn to Jesse to see his astonished expression.

“You are unbelievable.”

“I know” I say with a smirk, “Now come on, jump in.”

Without hesitating he jumps straight in creating a tidal wave over my head.

“Uhh, thanks” I say looking round for Jesse as I realise he’s not there. “Stop taking the mick.”

After about a minute or so there’s still no sign of him. I start to get worried so dive down to take a look. It’s no use. I can’t see him anywhere and start to panic.

“Jesse! Are you ok?! Jesse!”

The water is so still, and there’s dead silence everywhere when...

“Boo!”

Jesse Jumps out of the water behind and scares the life out of me.

“Ahh!” I scream.

He starts to laugh hysterically.

“It’s not funny you idiot! I thought you had drowned or something! I hate you for that!” I nearly shout.

“That was so hilarious. You should of seen your face.”

“Really well I can’t. I swear, I am going to punch you in the face if you don’t stop laughing.”

He continues.

“Now!”

He carries on purposely, so I punch him in the arm with all of my strength – which is absolutely none – because I just couldn’t punch him in the face. I would never forgive myself ever again. Never.

“Ow, what did I do?”

I don’t even bother to answer that stupid question, so instead I just give him the evils.

“Ha! You sound like such a girl when you scream.”

“Wow, you really are stupid. I am a girl, duh.”

“I know, it’s just hilarious.”

A smile shoots across my face and then I start laughing too.

“Great, you got me started now. Come on, let’s get out of here.” I say climbing out onto the bank. He follows close behind as I grab my stuff and we start walking along the path, dripping wet in the freezing cold.

“That was great.” Jesse says honestly.

“What did I say? I told you I was fun.”

“Yeah, you are.” He smiles at me oddly.

“What?”

“Nothing, I just... I just think that you’re different from other girls. You’re down to earth and easy to hang around with. My kinda girl.” He winks.

Wow, he said that I’m his kinda girl and actually meant it. Oh my gosh. I’m dying inside.

I don’t know what to say so the best I come out with is...

“Um, thanks.”

“No, thank you for inviting me out today.”

“It’s nothing, you don’t have to thank me for that.”

“Well I am. Honestly, I’m so greatfu-“

I cut him off.

“Ok, ok now stop with the nice talk. You sound like a sap.”

He smiles once more before we reach the end of the path.

As we walk home, we stop at the crossing, where we see Ava on the other side of the road with her little petty gang of wannabe sluts.

“Great.” Jesse sighs, not particularly pleased to see her.

“Don’t worry about her. Just forget about her all together.”

“Yeah, I know. What the hell, she’s a two-timing biatch anyway.”

I giggle, because it’s blatantly true and now everyone knows it.

Ava and her pathetic followers cross over.

“Hanging around with that loser I see.” She says aiming it in my direction.

I don’t want to start an argument but I can’t help but say something back.

“Uh, actually, if you’re talking about Jesse then you’re mistaken. He is not a loser.”

“Oh really now, that’s sweet for sticking up for him, but I think you’ll find he’s just a pathetic little boy.”

I could tell straight away by looking at Jesse’s face, that had hurt. I had to do something.

I go over to Ava and push her up against the stone wall, my arm pressing against her neck.

“Don’t you ever say anything like that about him again! At least he’s not a two-timing cheat, who’s only aim in life is to make everybody else feel lower than them. Better still, that doesn’t even have a life.”

I see the look of fear in her eyes, when she pushes me off of her and walks on in silence.

“Thank you.” says Jesse quietly.

“That’s ok, I just get so angry when people say something like that about someone I care about.”

“You care, about me?”

I bite my lip.

“Well yeah, sure I do.”

My cheeks blush bright red.

“Jesse, there’s something I need to say.”

I’m just going to risk everything and tell him how I feel.

“Wait, don’t say it.”

“What? But I need to tell you something.”

“Just don’t.”

“But I-“

The last thing I see is Jesse roll his eyes at me, before he passionately pulls me into his arms, when I feel his soft lips press against mine.

It seems like forever before I pull away.

“Wait, you just kissed me.”

“Yes, I did because I was just about to say something but you wouldn’t shut up.”

“What?”

“This might come as a shock to you.”

“What? Just tell me.”

“Ok.”

He takes a deep breath.

“I’m in love with you Ebony. I’m in love with you and I’ll never love anyone else like I love you.”
