Chapter 1

I propped myself up on my pillows and reached over to my bedside table grabbing my pair of hearing aids. I put them in and let the world adjust before sliding out from under my sheets. I went to my wardrobe and slid it open grabbing fresh undergarments, a flannelette shirt, a pair of black skinny jeans and converse.

I proceeded to head to my bathroom, having a 15 minute shower and then running a brush through my dark brown hair and leaving it out. My hair was straight anyway when I woke up so I didn't need to use my straightener. I brushed my teeth and headed downstairs opening the fridge and taking out an avocado and frozen berries. After blending the ingredients I poured it gently into a travel cup and grabbed my house keys before calling out
"See you later"

I walked for about 30 minutes before I arrived at school and I headed to my locker to swap out my books needed for the day. I grabbed my english folder and tucked it into my backpack. I walked quickly to my first class as the teacher despised late arrivals even though I had 10 minutes to spare. I opened the door to see Mrs Freeman already at her desk sorting through handouts for today's lesson.

"Hello Mrs Freeman" I said as I walked to my desk and placed my bag down before heading towards her desk.

"Please Aria, you know that in college you should call your teachers by their first name" Mrs Freeman said

"Please can I call you Mrs Freeman, it sounds more polite to me?" I ask hopefully

Mrs Freeman offers me a smile and nods.

"Aria would you like to put these handouts on people's desks for me Dear?" She said looking at me

I nod vigorously and politely thanked her as I placed a handout at every seat in the room and handed Mrs Freeman back the spares.

"How have you been Aria? I heard this is your 3rd pair of hearing aids this month and it's still early in The school year" Mrs Freeman asked

"I'll be fine Mrs Freeman. don't worry" I said putting on a smile and taking a seat at my desk unpacking the essential items for this lesson.

I looked at my watch and right at 8:28 the room was flooded with students. At 8:30 on the dot Mrs Freeman began her class.

I listened happily as Mrs Freeman explaining what would be happening in the upcoming unit. We were learning about a close text study called Jasper Jones the play version and I happily began reading when we were told to read for the rest of the lesson.

At the end of class I waited for the room to be empty before I left then packed up my belongings and thanking the teacher as I exited the room. As I walked to my locker, many people stared at me as I went past. It's been this way since primary school. I kept my eyes trained on the ground until I bumped into something that screeched.

"Watch where your going!!" A blonde girl said pushing me.

" I thought you were deaf not blind!" Another girl said walking to the blondes side, as another two girls appeared.

Amy, Brittany, Rebecca and Stacey. The schools mean girls, they have terrorised me since early primary school.

"Move!" A voice said pulling me out of my thoughts. I looked at Amy the blonde and stepped aside as she walked past, her hand grabbed onto my hearing aid, ripping it out of my ear. I looked at her covering my ear as blood trailed down my arm and dripped of my elbow.

A bunch of shocked and worried sounds followed, I smiled at them. Reassuring them I was fine. My eyes widened as Amy dropped my aid to the floor and crushed it under her foot, as she lifted it I sunk to the ground to pick up the pieces. She ripped out my hearing aid on the other ear laughing. Her friend Rebecca took it from her doing the same. They continued to laugh at me, I couldn't hear due to my hearing aids being broken but I could lip read.

I smiles at the politely and sprinted away from them, covering my bloodied ear and drips fell to floor every now and again.
I arrived at the infirmary sry they checked my ear to say it was going to be fine. After 10 minutes it stopped bleeding and I washed up to my elbows with soap and warm water. I headed to the outside area of the college where not many students go.

I saw Ellie my best friend, sitting under a very lush tree and reading a book, she saw me and smiled.

"Hey Aria" Ellie said

"Hello" I said back smiling at her.

I sat next to her and pulled out my drink I made in the morning she was staring at me. She tapped my shoulder, it was something she did when she knew I had no hearing aids.

"What happened?" I read and my lips became a thin line

"Stepped on" I said to her grimacing
When ever my hearing aid were damaged my kind aunt would pay for new ones, all of the pairs cost her a lot and yet she refused to not buy them for me.

The rest of the day flowed by quickly and Ellie and I headed to my house as it was a Friday. At 11pm we decided to turn off the lights and sleep took me over.
