This Is I

This is me.

They tell themselves uncertainly as they realise
The words they mumble
The words that change everything

Dad, this is me.

They tell their father doubtingly as they hope for acceptance
A father who does not accept their child
Should not be called a father but
A man without compassion

Mum, this is me.

They say convincingly to their mother, certain for love
A mother who does not love her child
Is not mother but simply a woman
Who did not deserve the beauty
Of birth

This is me, this is me!

They scream as they suffocate
In a body that is not their own
Their souls tearing at the walls
Wanting out, just wanting out

This is me, this is me...

They sob as they as they take the words to the heart
And let it tear them apart
Skin itching, blood flowing, heart pounding

This is me, this is me.

They whisper as they breathe out their soul and close their eyes to the world
They are finally free from their cage
