Standing at her mother's graveside wasn't what Lynn had thought she'd be doing at the age of eighteen, but when her mother, on several occasions, tried to drink herself to death, Lynn knew that the end was near.
Lynn's mother, Virginia, had recently gone through a nasty breakup with a man she said she'd marry. Virginia was in her early forties, although she looked older as a result of a drinking and drug problem she faced in her twenties. She had her daughter Lynn at the age of twenty-four, when she was married to her first husband. When they divorced four years later, Lynn was left without a father, and a mother who buried her sorrows in alcohol and drugs. Virginia soon married a man who took her on a honeymoon in the Bahamas, but he left her there and sent divorce papers to her not long after. Since then, Virginia dated and slept around. She got drunk a lot too, even after promising Lynn she wouldn't. Finally, Virginia met Larry.
Larry was an average man. He was normal in every sense, his clothes, his car, his job, and his apartment. He met Virginia when she went out to celebrate her fortieth birthday at a bar. He thought she was beautiful, and they began to talk. Larry moved in with Virginia and Lynn, and would sometimes talk about him and Virginia getting married. Their relationship was fine, as far as anyone was concerned, until Virginia cheated on him one night after drinking. She and Larry fought for months until he moved out.
Virginia was devastated, although she was in the wrong. She was sick and tired of living. She tried to overdose once, and tried to drink herself to death a number of times. One night, she gave up. After selling all her belongings, purchasing some drugs from her dealer, and buying some alcohol, she was ready. She threw some money at Lynn and told her to get out. Lynn obeyed, but after not hearing from Virginia at all the next day, she went back. Her mother was dead on the kitchen floor.
Lynn had worked out the funeral plans and invited Virginia's only sister, Catherine, to the service, as well as some people Virginia knew: her dealer, Larry, and some coworkers. After the service, Catherine, being a sympathetic aunt, invited Lynn to live with her. Lynn protested, telling her aunt that she was almost in college anyway, and she could legally live on her own. Catherine proceeded to tell Lynn that it wouldn't be that big of a deal, and that she missed seeing her, since Catherine lived in Australia. After a while, Lynn decided that she didn't have anything left to stay for, and told Catherine that she'd love to live with her.
A week later, Lynn boarded a plane that would take her to Sydney, Australia, and toward a new, and better, life.
