"What did you say?" Your mom asks, sitting down across from you at the dining room table with her mug of freshly made coffee.
You had just told her about Abels proposal and the moment the words came out of your mouth her face had gotten the most unimpressed expression you've ever seen her make. And it stuck.
"I said yes... I love him. So... I said yes." You say playing with the spoon in your own coffee mug.
"Hm." She takes a slow sip of her coffee then shakes her head. "Are you sure you're making the right decision? I felt Mason was such a good fit for you. Maybe you should have thought this through for awhile."
"I did think it through, for two days. I was afraid at first but I love him and he loves me."
Your mother scoffs and takes another sip of her coffee.
"And he's coming over for dinner tomorrow night." You say quickly before taking another sip of your coffee and look anywhere but at your mother's shocked disapproving facial expression.
"You what?"
~"And what did she say?" Abel asks sitting down on the bed and pulling his hoodie off.
You hesitated a moment and distracted yourself with a hair tie on the dresser before responding.
"She said she's really happy for us..."
"Really?... huh."
You smile fakely, still not making eye contact with him. He knows your mother has never been too fond of him, to put it lightly. She thinks he's a "low life drug addict who's incapable of love beyond the bedroom." She may have listened to a song or two.
"What else did she say?" He asks walking over to you and snaking his arms around your waist.
"That she's very glad I'm happy... and uh... yeah that's all." You lie.
Abel nods considering your answer for a moment before bending down to kiss your neck.
You bite your lip, "And I told her we're going over for dinner tomorrow night."
Abel pulls back to look at you.
"You what?"
~
"I can't believe you did this." Abel says rubbing his sweaty palms together and wiping them on his jacket.
"Relax, it'll be fine." You say mostly to yourself as you push the doorbell.
There's silence as the two of you wait for your mother to answer the door until, "I can't do this." Abel says abruptly turning on his heel towards the car.
"Abel!" You say grabbing his arm and pulling him back. "It's fine."
He pulls his inhaler out of his pocket, grabbing onto the railing next to him dramatically.
"Will you stop that you're goi-" you're cut off by the front door swinging open and your mother greeting you happily and shooting a glare at Abel.
"Oh what a surprise." She says tightening her silk robe which was thrown on overtop of a pair of sweatpants.
"Mother, I told you last night that we were coming for dinner." You say to her.
She puts her hand on her chest still pretending she didn't know you two were coming, "Oh, did you?" She asks.
You roll your eyes, "Yeah, I did."
"Must have slipped my mind," She fake laughs, "Come on in." She steps to the side with that annoying fake smile plastered on her face.
