What follows is a story inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's original "The Little Mermaid," a fairy tale that is much darker than the Disney version with which we are most familiar. I have taken elements of Andersen's fairy tale and woven them into a story that includes a few pieces of other mermaid lore.
I'm fascinated by mermaids. Not buxom, blonde, friendly mermaids, but the dangerous, wild creatures from the depths of the sea who lure sailors to their deaths. In some stories, hapless fishermen take these mermaids to wife through trickery, only to discover that a mermaid cannot be tamed.
