"louis! if you don't get up now you'll be late for school!", mum yells for what seems like the hundredth time this morning.
i finally drag myself from the nest of blankets and swing my legs over the side of the bed. glancing at the clock, i curse seeing that i only have thirty minutes get ready. quickly i stand, only to be met with the inevitable dizziness that comes with the hypoglycemic side effects.
'you're fine louis, you'll just get a quick
bite to eat once you're downstairs and be on your way', i think to myself.i shuffle to the connected bathroom and glance at myself in the mirror. i barely can recognize myself with the deep bags and pale skin. i sigh and curse myself for not taking that glucose tablet my mum offered me last night. i quickly stumble into the shower and wash my tired body. i hop out wrapping a fluffy towel around my body and blindly walk back to my room. i throw on the first thing i see plus my glasses and am finally downstairs.
"mornin' mum", i say exhaustedly.
"good mornin' lou how are ya feelin'?" she asks moving away from feeding the twins breakfast. she places a caring hand on my forehead and kisses the side of my head.
"been worse, but not too great", i say honestly as i lay my head on the breakfast bar.
"see, i told you you needed that tablet last night, but you refuse to listen. it's mother's instinct i'm tellin' you, you kids never listen to me", she has an 'i told you so' look ok her face and i can only sigh and groan.
"alright be sure to take the tablet, check your blood sugar, and eat something ok?" she kisses my head again, "oh and please don't forget to set up your pump, too."
"right, got it. tablet, blood sugar, eat something, insulin pump." i say listing off everything. i go into the downstairs bathroom and set up all the necessary things for my pump. unlike most people my age, i have the insulin pod. a compact easy pod that has everything collected into the small thing. a small bottle of insulin with a short tube and a needle on the end to go into my pancreas. all controlled with a little hand held remote to control everything including my insulin intake and my blood sugar.
i swiftly and painlessly insert the needle into my side with my years of experience. i set my settings on my remote so that every time my BS is under 70, it beeps. and of course, it immediately starts to beep.
"ok. ok. we get it", i exclaim to the machine. clicking the buttons so that it shuts off for a second. "ok time to eat"
as i walk to the kitchen again, mum runs around the corner looking frazzled.
"louis, darling, i need you to speed it up a bit. this is kind of unexpected, but i need you to do me a favor."
"well..it depends..."
she sighs, "louis"
"you know i'm kidding mum. what's up?"
"the new neighbors across the street need a favor. they have a boy that goes to you and the girl's school, but they can't drive him this morning. and i was wondering if he could just tag along with you lot?"
for a minute, i just stare at her.
"we have new neighbors?"
"louis please. just do as i ask. get the girls and go, you're already late."
"ok", i sigh, "lotts, fizzy, be quick we have a new person on board today!"
"thank you, babe. i'll make it up to you."
"yeah, yeah. i've got to get going ok?" i say kissing both sets of twins and then my mum.
"okay, i love you louis, please try and not pass out today," she chuckles," girls! seriously! get moving!"
"we're here mum. no need to blow the roof off the place," lottie chuckles flipping her newly died platinum hair.
"alright girls have a great day and make friends with the new neighbor boy."
"but not too good of friends," i chime in with i wink to my sisters. that makes everyone chuckle and then we're out the door.
i swing the door open only to be met with a wall, made of human. i look up to meet emerald eyes and a nest of curly hair.
"sorry, i was just about to knock. you're louis, right?" he slowly drawls.
"depends on who's asking," i sass.
"louis!" both girls exclaim.
"yes, this is unfortunately louis. i'm his younger sister charlotte and this is our younger sister felicite. sorry for him being so rude, he's just grumpy aren't you lou?," lottie explains patting my head. i stand pouting.
the stranger chuckles deeply, "no s'alright, i would be freaked out too. i'm the new neighbor from across the street, harry."
"well 'new neighbor harry from across the street' we're already late so if you could kindly move that'd be great.""again he's just always grumpy in the morning," lottie giggles.
"hey if you're wanting a ride lotts i recommend shutting and upping right about now."
"he's very fiery for someone so short,"i hear harry whisper. for some reason, it brings a fiery blush to my face and i quickly get into the car.
"alright, anyone who's not in gets left," i exclaim putting the key in the ignition starting up the car.
quickly everyone shoves in the car and soon we're driving to the dreaded school. as i'm driving, the familiar dizzy feeling hits me again and i chuckle is disbelief at myself.
"what?" lottie asks from the passenger seat.
"my sugar's low. i forgot to eat again."
and immediately i know my day's gonna be hell.
