Yet again, this would be the moment when something spectacular happened. The boys would be saved, anything could happen. This is a fairy tale after all...
But not all fairy tales are happy ones. The very first fairy tales written by the Grimm brothers, often had unfortunate endings.
Endings where the hero's fail in the end.
Endings when the big bad wolf eats the grandmother and Little Red Riding-Hood.
But those tales were told for adults. They had already seen their own fairy tale go up in smoke, and enjoyed listening to others suffer as well. But for children, their story has only begun.
Just because it looks like the story is over, doesn't mean it has to be.
You see... when the witch threw her staff across the room, it cracked the crystal embedded at the top. And all of the witches magic seeped out of the gem.
And just like that, the kingdom was free.
The merchant at the gate continued yelling at the dog that was eating his sausages. The broken bird put itself back together, and flew off to find her nest. Everything was just as it was before the witch.
The hero's frozen in the basement woke up one by one and said hello to the sun for the first time in hundreds of years. Owen was the last to leave, rubbing his eyes like he took a nap.
Alex had found the forgotten fairy light in his pocket while he was in the dungeon. An awoken guard saw the light in the dungeon. He found Alex shivering in a musty cell.
The boys later found each other at the gate, exhausted and home-sick. They caught a ride home with a troupe of traveling gypsies. And as payment for the ride, they told their story. The gypsies later told Alex and Owen's story in every town they visited.
The king and queen of the crystal kingdom never did find out what really happened while they were frozen. They found the bones of the witch next to her broken staff, and her room full of spell books.
It may seem like a quick fix to a horrible situation, but fates can change. It's okay to be brave, okay to be scared. Good things do happen.
