her eyes fluttered open. for a moment she was so disoriented that the world seemed to swing around her. first friday and samson came flooding back and her heart skittered in her chest. now entirely awake, she bolted up into a sitting position. the movement caused her head to pound. she rubbed her temples and called out, "jairus?"

when there was no answer she opened her eyes, surprised to see she was back home but there was something different. maybe it was the lack of sound. she grew up with jairus and matthias so the house was always loud from their bickering, now it was filled with ghosts.

she climbed off the bed and staggered to the living room where she found her brother asleep in front of the front door and their fathers bow and arrows clutched tightly in his arms, ready to use. she bent down beside him and pried the weapon out of his hands which caused him to stir awake.

"claudia?" he asked, sitting up straighter, suddenly alert.

"you don't know how to use this thing," she said and set the bow aside. "you'll just end up hurting yourself rather than the attacker. which is who, by the way?"

jairus stood up and peeked outside the window before looking back at her. "don't you remember what happened this morning? you did something. i saw the way you acted during the fight. i saw the way samson looked at you."

claudia broke their gaze and looked to the side. "nothing happened."

"then why did i have to physically force you to move your legs? and why did i have to carry you out of the arena when you passed out? why were those silvers coming after you? we were lucky i outran them and lost them in the crowd but it won't be long before they find out where we live."

"and this will keep the silvers at bay?" she asked, pointing to the bow. "it'll protect us against the all powerful silvers? neither of us know how to use it but it's not like it matters anyways, not when they attack us with their abilities."
