CHAPTER THREE
farewellthe walk home was silent. claudia had a hole in her stomach from just the thought of leaving her last remaining sibling behind. she thought of trying to change his mind, but even she knew how dangerous it was for her to stay there.
she stood aside with her back against the wall, watching silently as jairus began to board up all the windows and lock the doors. his decision was set, and she knew there was no changing it. he was as stubborn as matthias. in fact, he had a lot of the same qualities matthias had; caring, stubborn, disciplined, honest. but no matter what, he would never be matthias. he was gone.
she couldn't watch her brother spiral any longer so she left him alone, closing the door of her bedroom and leaning against it for support. how did things go so wrong? she thought.
claudia walked over to her closet and began to pack. she would be leaving the day after tomorrow and most likely never returning back to her childhood home; the place that held so many memories of her lost loved ones. she held back the tears and gathered up her sentimental items.
her fathers watch. her mothers birthstone ring. matthias' tape recorder, along with the tapes he recorded before he was sent off to war. she listened to a couple of them, but hearing his voice hurt her too much to finish them. he mostly talked about things he traded and how his training with the bow and arrows was going.
she looked around her room, realizing she didn't have anything of jairus'. they were twins, supposed to be sent off to war together, so she didn't think she needed anything to remember him by. now i do, the thought made her body shiver.
claudia closed the suitcase and slid it under the bed, then climbed under the sheets. she listened to the sound of a hammer pounding on a nail as she drifted off to sleep.
