My dressing room was a nice minimal, quiet box room that I had already fallen in love with. Don't ask me why, I was expecting to be sharing a room with a curtain dividing us and awkward moments where you're queuing for the loo when you're about to go on stage because you all share one but this was quite the opposite. Sitting down, I couldn't help but reminisce of a time I sat watching WWE on the tv with my brother, discussing what characters we'd be, what outfits we'd wear and most importantly what entrance music we had. I had stumbled across mine while flicking through songs on my iPod and now here I was being the character I'd talked about, dressed in the outfit I'd said and hearing the song I chose as I walked onto the stage. This was immense.
"Lucy?" Frenzy popped her head round the door as she knocked. I knew it was her straight away from the accent.
"Yeah? What's up?" I sat more comfortably and offered her a seat. She walked in, looking tame and embarrassed, and sat on the chair.
"I'm sorry about your injury! I just want you to know it wasn't anything against you... Some people have been saying you've taken it personally!" I rolled my eyes and let out a small laugh.
"They always say things like that to spook you. Honestly, I know it was an accident and its fine and stitched up now! Don't worry!" I offered her a comforting smile and she half-smiled back. She was nothing like her character in real life; so calm, quiet and collected.
"Alright. I just wanted to double check..." she stood up as I did and we hugged goodbye. She walked out of my dressing room quickly, shutting the door as she left. An eerie silence fell over the room and hated the idea of being stuck in here forever in silence, so after a quick change into my favourite blue denim skinny jeans and black vest top, I headed over to the canteen area.
Walking in, the noise hit me. Were those doors soundproofed? There was a general sound of chatter and laughing around me, everywhere I looked were groups of recognisable and unrecognisable faces littering the area like there were no tables. And there weren't. Not many anyway. I grabbed my food and headed for the seating area, only to find they were all taken by one group or another. There were spaces on them but who was I to go and ask to sit with them? They're well known in the industry and this is my first day, it’s like a first year sitting with the seniors! Giving up on my quest for a table, I turned round to walk away but stopped instantly as someone was right in front of me, also scanning the table area.
"There are no free tables, sorry." I said in a sad yet kind manner. The man with black hair but a large blonde streak through the right side simply smiled at me.
"My teammates are on one of these tables, I'm just trying to see which one!" He answered.
"Oh..." I said, sounding defeated. "Good luck!" I moved again, about to make my way back to my dressing room when he stopped me.
"Wow! That must have hurt!" I looked back at him and noticed him staring at my eyebrow, the one that had been split in my fight.
"Debut match, debut injury!" I voiced the thoughts I had earlier on. He shook his head but smiled.
"You know, my teammate Roman did something like that!" My ears pricked up as he mentioned the only male name I recognised. I hid the grin that wanted to appear on my face.
"I met him when I was in the medic’s room! Apparently I whinged less than he did when his was done!" I let out a laugh remembering what happened a little while ago.
"Doctors said that, eh? He forgot to mention that bit, or the fact he'd met you!" He held his free hand out, balancing the tray of food in the other hand. "I'm Seth, Seth Rollins."
"Lucy." I held out my free hand and shook his.
"Well, if I find them you're coming to sit with us. I gotta hear what those doctors said about Roman!" He chuckled. I quickly scanned the tables again and pointed over near the back where Roman and one other guy were sitting. Seth gestured for me to follow him, weaving in and out of tables until we reached the table of Seth and his teammates.
"Guys, this is-" Seth began.
"Lucy." Roman interrupted a smirk on his face. "I remember you from the medic’s room." I nodded proudly and smiled at the third member of their group.
"I'm Dean, since no one is going to introduce me to you!" He held out his hand and I put my tray down on the table, shaking his hand too. Finally sitting down, I felt like I was suddenly the focus point of the room, yet only three people were looking my way. I could feel my cheeks heating up with every second I sat at this table.
"So, how's the injury?" Roman asked me.
"Looks like it hurt!" Dean exclaimed. "You know Roman here did nearly the same thing? Only his was on his eyelid." Dean tucked into some food as I nodded.
"Yeah the doctors told me a little bit about it." I said with a smirk as I looked over to Roman.
"You know, Lucy, I'd have loved to know what was said!" Seth added quickly, a grin like a Cheshire cat on his face. Roman shot him a look that told him he should shut up, but I couldn’t help but smile as I began.
"Oh not much, they just said mine was a worse injury but in a better place and I whinged less than Roman while it was being fixed. They were quite impressed with me actually!" Roman rolled his eyes.
"I see you're just as happy as they are to make fun of me!" He said. I felt my stomach drop a little.
"Oh no, I'm just proud of myself!" I let out a giggle as I took a bite of my food. Roman muttered something that sounded like 'unbelievable' and shook his head as Seth and Dean roared with laughter.
"I like you." Dean pointed over to me as he calmed down from laughing. “I do!” I let out a small silent laugh and smiled. Well, it couldn’t hurt making friends on the first day of working here! I had my storyline sorted out, but I needed to have a social life too! Of course I had my friends and family but being friends with people at work is always a bonus.“I like you guys too!” I said quickly afterwards, just in case they did want to hear me say it back. I ate a few small forkfuls of food before I heard a clatter behind me. I looked up to the guys but they were all looking behind me so I slowly turned my head to see Frenzy squaring up to another female wrestler. My eyes widened and my jaw clenched as I instinctively got up and walked over to them.
“You alright?” I looked at Frenzy, although she wasn’t taking her eyes off this other woman. She had long blonde hair and was tall and skinny. She wore a short, tight black dress and heels, dressed up like she was trying to impress people.
“Yeah.” She said through gritted teeth, her gaze still locked on this woman. “This woman just insulted me and I’m trying to resist the urge to hit her.”
“Insulted you?” I had to check.
“Yeah. She walked into me and knocked my tray of food on the floor but she felt the need to swear, shout and implied that I should be fighting in the men’s matches…” I could see this girl shift awkwardly as Frenzy relayed what happened to a cafeteria of people. “Before insulting my looks, body and fighting ability.” I shook my head. I could feel a fire burning in my stomach. I hated when people felt the need to speak to others like this. The whole reason I took up wrestling was to show stupid bullies that I was better than them and I could change into what I wanted. I smiled as I imagined how they must have reacted to seeing me perform my debut on television but quickly shut that to the back of my mind.
“Pfft don’t worry about it, babe, she’s just jealous.” I smirked at her as I looked her up and down. She pouted and folded her arms.
“Jealous of what?” This woman asked me harshly. I narrowed my eyes at her.
“At the fact she’s a great wrestler who has made it to WWE in a shorter time than most, that she’s athletic and fit and willing to be herself and not look like a fake Barbie doll to attract the men in this place, not to forget the fact she’s actually a really nice person too!” I said in one breath. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Frenzy look at me with a smile.
“Sorry, who even are you anyway?” She looked me up and down and turned her nose up at me.
“Lucy.” I said sharply. “And you are?” I said in an equally harsh tone.
“Summer Rae.” She said as if it was common knowledge. I rolled my eyes and sighed. She was too cocky for my liking. I could see her looking around the room as if she was royalty and I couldn’t stand it. She didn’t need to be like that, I bet she was nice under that exterior.
“Well, Summer Rae, if you want me to prove to you I deserve to be here, I’ll fight you in the ring and see how quickly you realise you should have kept quiet…” Frenzy threatened before pushing Summer Rae out of the way and walking out of the room. I stared at Summer with one eyebrow raised and waited for her to take one last look around before walking out too. Well, there goes my idea of making friends!
