Chapter 4: Checklist For The End Of The World

The funeral. God the funeral. We held it in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, because that's where she wanted to be buried. She left everything to me. Her home, her money, her company, everything. I made a speech I think. I don't remember. I remember the man reading the will pulling me aside, and told me about some secret items on the will. It was two items in Holly's room, in the safe in her dresser. He told me the combination, shook my hand, told me good luck, and left.
When I went home I found the safe and what was in it. It was a checklist and half a poem.

Checklist for the end of the world (or my death, whichever comes first)
"I do not judge, I observe."
Don't judge people. Who are we to judge people when we aren't even human? Like dude. Come on. You are literally the sun. I am literally the Moon. We are the only two people in the world who are alike. (Except Void but don't listen to anything she says she's just edgy)

Don't kill people. I know you radiate heat and can burn someone from the inside out, but do not kill people. Ever. It's the Golden Rule of crime fighting: Don't kill anyone.

Be a hero. Try your best, and don't ever lose your creativity. Because creativity is what the world needs. Make Nim City better, from the ground and from the sky.

Don't stay stuck on my death. Move on. Help people, you'll be a better help to the world than I ever was or could be.

Try new things. Be open. Let people in. You are not the only one that can spark sunshine in a person. Be courageous and brave. You don't know if you can do it unless you do. Everything is impossible until someone does it.

Don't waste your time on sadness. You are so much better than that. "You are a walking contradiction of humility and boasts. Reality braided in with fiction, made of sunshine and ghosts."

"Sometimes I feel like giving up, but then I remember I have a lot of people to prove wrong."
Spite is a powerful motivator. Use it. :)

You are the storm. You have untold power, do not be afraid to use it.

Don't give up. Don't you ever give up. You can lose hope, but you cannot give up. We can't give up, because if we do, the people we swore to protect, die. Don't give up the fight.
Life is not forever, even for us. We will die someday. Everyone will. So live it. Live life the way it must be lived: extraordinarily. Don't look back on life and wish you had done more. Be the person you need, not the person society expects you to be.

I am the hero
My name is Night

I stop the bad ones

I need Day, but she doesn't know it

She'll be a great hero when I'm gone

I have a loyal /sidekick/ friend
But even without her...

I wasn't sure who Void was. I knew what a double voice poem looked like. I knew what she wanted me to fill in to complete it. I stared at the papers, my fingers tracing over the lines in her handwriting. I put them back in the safe and went to get a drink.
