I set something on fire. Not on purpose! It just sort of... happened. Ok, so me and Night were out on patrol (wandering around Nim City until we get a signal from the cops, or until we find something ourselves,) and we came across this woman leaving a penthouse with, surprise, her pockets full of valuables. She said that she lives in that penthouse and she was coming out to get some fresh air. I (accidentally) set her pants on fire. Isn't irony cruel? We passed her over to the cops and went back on patrol. I can fly, but Night is fast. I usually fly low to the roof tops she runs across.
"Remember, Griffin is in town, she might join us later." Night's voice sparked in my comms.
"Oh yeah! When's she getting in?"
Night slowed, her feet sending gravel skittering across the roof. "About 15 minutes actually," she responded.
Griffin, or Nephele Argyris, was in town for a tech festival. Griffin has eagle wings, a lion's tail, lion ears, and is a tech genius. Her wings, tail, and ears are all light blonde, but her hair, uniform and mask are brown. She has a sleeveless zip up vest and armored pants, not unlike the ones paintballers use. Her mask is a pair of aviator goggles over a half mask covering her nose and mouth. To most of the world, she's just a smart greek woman with a hunch back, but to some, she's Griffin, a brilliant hero. She works in New York most of the time, dealing with the Rose Company, the local mob. When Nephele decided she wanted to be a hero, she came to Night for training. Luckily, she had just begun my training then as well.
Night waved me down to the rooftop saee was on and hopped down into the alley next to building. When she landed, the ground bucked underneath us, a tongue of flame and a breath of smoke poured into the sky as a building on the docks exploded and collapsed.
"Day? Day!" Someone was shaking my shoulders. I started, my gaze twitching to Night. "Get over there and stop the fire!" Right, right. I can do that. My ears rang and my throat felt dry. I lifted off the rooftop, towing Night by the arm below me. I set her down next to the building, in a shipping dock next to the bay. She darted away, searching for the perp that caused the fire. I turned to face the fire. I took a long, slow breath. I rose into the air, spreading my hands and reaching out to the dancing flames. I grabbed hold of them, drawing them into me. My eyes blazed red as I absorbed the power of the smoke and flames. Then it was out. My body glowed, fire dancing in my eyes. From the fire I knew there was nobody inside the building, and yet... who would blow up an empty building? And why? Do we have a mob now? Is it a 'look at me heroes, I'm so powerful and smart I can blow up buildings and you a can't do anything about it' type of power play?
