I could hear Toxic playing from my phone in the nurses' locker room as I passed it. It was probably my brother calling me for who knows what stupid reason, but I figured I might as well check it anyway, just in case.
"Hello?"
"Hey sis! Um..." he began, hesitating between his sentences, "So, uh, how's work?"
"Good, I'm apparently the nurse of a crazy patient who killed people," I joked.
"Uh, who? What's their name?" Damon asked, almost worriedly. I got concerned.
"Uh... Daniel Howell?"
"Wait, really?" Damon gasped. "Um... Lia, could you do something for me?" he asked.
"Of course," I said sincerely. I would do anything for Damon.
"Could you ask him, the next time you see him, if he remembers me and Jim?" To say I was confused would be an understatement.
"Wait, what? Damon what are you talking about? Damon?"
"I got to go. Mum's home. Love you!"
"Wait!! Damon, I-" he hung up. This was all so strange. I needed answers, whether I got them from Dan, Damon, or Ruthie, I was going to get an explanation from someone.
---
"Daniel?" I asked as I entered the cell again. It was silent, except for the screams that echoed through the hallway behind me. I shut the door behind me and turned to see Dan, on the tiny bed in the corner of the room, staring up at me.
"Hello there," he said as his mischievous smirk turned into a fully fledged grin. The nurses down here were supposed to talk with the patients for up to fifteen minutes, so I would have to stay in here with him whether I liked it or not. I decided I needed answers, so that was what I planned to get before I had to leave.
"Daniel," I started, "I have a few questions for you, if you don't mind me asking." I pulled the folded up picture from the lounge out of my bra, where I had stuffed it earlier.
"Sure, sweetheart. As long as I get something in return." He smiled ever so wildly.
"Like what?"
"Darling, I've been down here a long, long time without anyone to really keep me company." He began to relax on the bed, making me nervous. "I'll answer your questions, if you spare me a kiss," he said as he jumped up from the bed and started walking towards me. I nervously pushed him away.
"You answer the questions first." He grinned and then sat back down on the bed, as I leaned up against the wall. "Okay, I need to know how you got here?"
"Why?"
"Because... I do."
"Are you playing stupid with me here, or do you just live under a rock?" I shrugged. I had no idea what he was on about. "I'm everybody's worst nightmare. I'm the kid who killed his own parents then ran from the cops. I'm the guy who broke out of jail after two months. I'm the kid who crushed his family's dreams and destroyed his friends' lives." I remembered what Damon said, about Dan.
"Okay," I said hesitantly. I didn't know what to say. I began to pull the old photo out of my bra when I noticed Dan eyeing my lips. Pervert. "Do you recognize this picture?" His eyes went immediately to the photo, his expression changing like it was hit by a bus. His eyes shifted from the photo to me, and then to his twiddling thumbs.
"Yeah... I do."
"How do you know Damon?"
"Okay, okay. Look, I answered enough of your stupid questions, alright? You still owe me the other end of our agreement," he said, getting back up off the bed and lunging towards me, trying to pin me down. I looked up at the clock, trying to see if I could leave. I screamed, but before anything could come out, Dan's hand was cupped around my mouth. I pushed him out of my way, once again and ran to the door.
"Come on! I answered your fucking questions! You had better keep your promises sweetheart or I'll have your neck in my hand!!" He screamed louder and louder as I shut the door and ran down the hall, retreating to the rusty elevator.
