Karen

Your memories of Karen weren't pleasant. In fact, as she hugged you right now you wanted to peel her off your skin like the leech she was. Towards the end of your sophomore year in high school, you had become the newest target for Karen. She was the reason why you almost got kicked out of school and almost why you considered running away when you were younger. Fortunately you had someone there that helped clean up the mess they started.

You gently pushed Karen away.

"Karen," you said while trying not to throw up in your mouth. "Why are you back here? I thought you went to Australia after senior year to go to college?"

She smiled at you awkwardly. "Right....Well you know how senior year got complicated?"

That's a nice way of saying you bullied me over a stupid love interest.

"Well," she continued. "I never actually went to college.

My parents called me back home to work and I was
really stubborn when it came to going back to school. I even dropped out of my community college."
You tried so hard not to laugh at this situation.

"Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. But why are you here?"

"I lost my highschool diploma and I was wondering if the school could give me a copy. I was planning on going back to college here in Ikebukuro!" She smiled widely.

"What are you doing here?"

Ugh, that dreaded question.

"I work here actually. I'm an English teacher," you stated.

"That is so cool! I'm so glad I got to see you again! We should totally hang out sometime and catch up, you know?"

"Yeah, maybe. Now if you'll excuse me Karen, I've got business to attend to."

You tried to cut this conversation off coldly and smoothly so that she would hopefully get the hint that you weren't searching for a new BFF. And that business you needed to attend to was important despite how often it gave you a headache.

"Oh.....Well, I'm sure I'll be seeing you around."

"Yeah."

You began to walk away until Karen caught your attention.

"And, (Name), I'm sorry about what happened in highschool."

You didn't know why but it was like despite her poor attempt at an apology, it sounded like underneath that face of sincerity, she was smiling. Considering that Karen was a bitch, she was probably still happy over her stunt in senior year.

"Don't mention it, Karen," you said, your voice low and stinging with ice. "Don't mention it, ever."

Here you were at the same place yet again. You were getting tired of having to drag your ass down to Izaya's place just to only get a smidge of what you wanted to hear. With a sigh, you knocked on the apartment door and you were greeted by an expressionless Namie who merely sighed before letting you in.

"I don't know how you find the time to come back here. You know you're probably just doing what he wants," she said.

"I know," you nodded. "But maybe in this whole affair I can use him too."

"I like your confidence, kid," she chuckled. "Good luck, he's in his usual spot."

"Thanks."

Namie walked over to the kitchen to do who knows what, while you walked over to the living room to be greeted by a grinning Izaya. Sometimes it was like you were talking to a living Cheshire Cat instead of an annoying human being. You sat down on the couch and met his gaze with a hard look.

"Did you know?"

"Know what?" he asked amused. "I know many things, (Name) so if you're expecting me to spill all my secrets you're going to have to try harder."

"Did you know that fucking Karen was back in Ikebukuro?" you asked, very impatient and annoyed.

He sighed. "And if I did?"

You sprung up from your seat and marched over to his desk where you slammed your fists down. "Why didn't you tell me? Or what? Are you trying to orchestrate some major plan without me knowing? I'm not stupid, Izaya, I know how much of an ass you can be."

"It's nothing like that," he said, putting his hands up in defense. "She came to me asking for help. She wanted to know if it was a good idea to come back here."

"And you just had to make the final push to bring her here, huh? What," you scowled. "You wanted to see a little cat fight break out between us? Over your dumb ass?"

His face turned serious. "(Name), I know how things were difficult for you in high school and you two fighting over me is the least thing I'm interested in. I brought her here because I had a feeling she knew who this new informant was."

"You expect me to believe that bimbo knows anything?"

"While she may be stupid, Karen is and always will be someone who will do whatever it takes to get what she wants. I know you two hate each other but you need to get a grip on yourself, (Name), otherwise you're no better than her."

Those words hurt you in your chest and coming from Izaya, it made you even more irritated. But you tried your best to contain your anger.

"So what now, huh? Become her new best friend?"

"I'll handle things for now. You just need to keep your low profile."

"I'll try," you said, shoulders slumping in defeat.

He pouted. "Aw, is (Name) still upset? She's just some silly bully don't let her get to you."

"Do you not care about me?"

The words left your mouth before you could even think twice about saying them. Izaya looked at you, his eyes wide a little as if even he wasn't expecting you to say that. He tries to quickly register himself again but it was too late, you had shocked him and now you were standing before him like a flustered mess. You couldn't help it. Every time you looked at Izaya he reminded you of the young highschool boy you had met on that fateful day and all the things you two had shared. He was a pain in the ass but it was almost like he was your pain in the ass. However after such a dreadful day you were sure you just weren't thinking properly.

You walked back to the couch to sit down, your head hanging low since you were unable to meet his gaze again.

"I know this is going to sound stupid and pathetic," you whispered, voice cracking a little. "I was pissed at you earlier because I still remember how things were in highschool....how you were. You were reckless and a jerk, someone who always toyed with others for petty things. But I'd like to think I was your friend at some point." You looked up at him with a small smile on your lips. "Well....was I?"

"I love all my humans, (Name)," he said. You felt your eyes almost roll to the back of your head. "However, I do admit that you are my favorite."

"After all those fun times how couldn't I be?" you teased with a smirk.

"Do you want to take a trip back on memory lane?"

"You wish." You stuck your tongue out at him and got up from the couch. "So what happens now?"

"Well, I do have a job for you if you're interested," he grinned. "And it has to do with Karen."

You raised an eyebrow. "So what is it?"

He spun around in his chair and grabbed a paper that was near his computer which he then handed to you. He leaned against his desk while you read the contents of the paper. It had all of Karen's contact info like her phone number, address, email and even popular locations that she had visited. Sometimes you forgot how much of a stalker Izaya could be. It creeped you out but also impressed you. If you had the same power he had, you'd probably be just as fucked up as him.

"I need you to spy on her."
