Ok, so here we go again with another history lesson from Pa-paw. Yep, those history lessons may not have been good for me. Remember that he always tried to put things in terms that I would or more accurately should understand. But..... I'm blonde. Being blonde is my handicap. Things that make perfect sense to others don't make sense to me.
January 15th is MLK day. Schools were usually closed on that day giving students a long weekend. The last day of school before that particular holiday was spent watching the movie LITTLE BOY KING. It's about the life of Martin Luther King Jr as a young boy. The song in the movie had a phrase "Little boy king, keep that dream, close to your heart." Anyway I rather enjoyed watching that movie instead of having real class work. Even though I did not understand the movie.
Yep, I never understoodthe movie but the phrase in the song stood out to me. "Keep that dream, close to your heart", it spurred a question in my head. Well, guess who I asked my question to! None other that the history man in my life, the one, the only My Pa-Paw. "So Pa-Paw, what was MLK's dream?"
At this particular time, Pa-Paw was dipping me some fudge ripple icecream. "His dream was to eat vanilla icecream with chocolate?"
"Like this icecream? You mean to tell me he never had fudge ripple icecream, that's sad?."
I happily enjoyed my icecream that day. Thinking, wow, I can't imagine not having this kind of icecream. I felt so lucky. I also had new information to tell my teacher. I was so happy I even told my mom what MLK's dream was. She did not bother to correct what I said because the info came from my Pa-Paw. My Pa-Paw always told me the truth.
Well, Tuesday finally rolled around. They didn't have to tell me twice to get up and get dressed for school. I was so excited to share what I learned.
Now fast forward to history class. My teacher Mrs. Miller asked how our MLK day was. I jumped up and said "mine was great. I had what MLK wanted."
A puzzled look crossed Mrs. Miller's face, "what do you mean?"
"His dream, I had his dream."
"You know what his dream was? "
"Yes ma'am, I do."
"Share with us what his dream was."
"Ok. My Pa-Paw told me MLK dreamed that he could eat vanilla icecream with chocolate. You know fudge ripple icecream. "
What on earth is that disgusted look on your face for. I just told you his dream, you asked me to tell you. Ya would have thought that my teacher would have been happy that I learned some history on my free time off from school (considering history class was a total bore.) Was Mrs. Miller happy? NOPE. NOT AT ALL. In fact I found myself face to face with the principal.
When I got home, I say and did what the principal assigned me to do before I could return to class. I had to write an appology to my teacher and classmates.
My teacher was black as was over half the class.
I felt bad when I had to tell my Pa-Paw someone had lied to him about what MLK dreamed. Pa-Paw just laughed.
