tyler hated going to the doctors office. it just reminded him that he wasn't normal and that his time on this earth was dwindling away. he hated being told the same exact thing every time he would go, nothing ever changing.

so as he walked through the lobby of the hospital with his mother, oxygen tank trailing along behind him, he tried to ignore the stares he was sure he was getting. his feet carried him down the all too familiar route to the wing of the hospital that he had spent so much time in, not even having to think about where he was going. he waved to all of the employees that he had grown close to over the years, sending them genuine smiles as he passed. he loved being able to see the nurses and secretaries whenever he went to the hospital, as they were so kind and understanding, but it was such a shame that he met them through those circumstances.

he took a seat by the fish tank in the corner of the room, watching the way the fishes all swam around in a blur of colorful fins, wondering what it was like to be so free, to not have something holding him back.

he got lost in his thoughts, wallowing in his own self pity, something that always seemed to find its way into his mind whenever he was at the hospital. his mother tapped his shoulder and his head snapped up, his favorite doctor standing in front of him with a clipboard as she held her arms open for a hug.

"hayley!" tyler exclaimed, rushing towards the blonde woman as he engulfed her in a tight hug, the two swaying back and forth.

"it's been so long, i wasn't here the last couple times you've had appointments. i've missed you so much." she walked alongside him as they made their way to the height and weight station, tyler beginning to take his shoes off without having to be told. he stood up against the wall, waiting to be measured with a big smile on his face.

hayley had only been a doctor for a few years but her and tyler were extremely close. tyler was one of her patients when she was training and since then she had been tyler's favorite. he was one of the reasons he looked forward to his appointments, always loving her caring nature.

"five feet, two inches and three quarters! you grew a bit since last time!" she said, giving tyler a high five as he stepped onto the scale, smiling at the number that was displayed, happy that it had gone up since he last weighed himself.

she led tyler and his mom into an exam room down the hall, the small boy hopping up onto the exam table and kicking his legs back and forth as he watched hayley scribble some things down on her clipboard.

"so how have you been?" she asked, leaning against the wall as she looked between tyler and his mother.

"i've been pretty good," he shrugged, not exactly sure what else to say.
