a week or so had passed and the three friends hadn't discussed their feelings as a group, tyler trying, but failing miserably, to not get too affectionate as he waited to bring up the topic. he wanted to have a conversation about it before he went along making out with his two best friends, but that proved to be much more difficult than he had thought. he couldn't last a minute alone with either of the boys before their lips were attached, enjoying the sensation of a kiss more than what was probably considered normal. he just loved the moments where he could forget about his genetic disease that was slowly killing him, instead focusing on the physical touch of another person.
josh and brendon still hadn't kissed, but they were all hanging out that afternoon and tyler was determined to change that. it may sound odd, tyler wanting his two crushes to kiss, but he felt like he had been cheating in a way, even though they weren't dating. he didn't want to be the only one who could be with more person.
the three sat in josh's room, goofing around as josh gave himself a new tattoo. tyler's head was in brendon's lap, his feet kicked up in the air as he swung them around to the tune of the song josh had put on. brendon was twirling his fingers through tyler's brown hair and josh studied them, clearing his throat to get their attention.
"so what's going on between you two?" he asked, his tone curious as he sent them a smile.
"i could ask the same thing about you guys," brendon said, smirking as josh raised his eyebrows.
"touché," josh chuckled. "are you two a couple yet, or..."
"no!" tyler exclaimed, a little too eagerly for his own liking. he hated sounding needy, not liking the thought of others seeing him as more vulnerable than he already appeared. "i wanted to talk to you guys about that."
they looked at him expectantly and josh quieted the music a bit, giving his full attention to the small boy.
"i'm pretty sure we all like each other," he took a deep breath from nervousness, "and i don't want this to just be me kissing you two, i want you guys to be able to do the same. god, that doesn't make any sense, does it?"
"i get it," josh assured, a tiny grin on his face at tyler's rambling. "i feel the same. got any input, brendon?"
"i don't know, i mean i've heard of poly relationships but i never really thought they could actually work," the dark haired boy shrugged.
"a what relationship?" tyler quizzed, having never heard the term before.
"a polyamorous relationship," josh clarified, earning a confused 'oh?' from tyler. "it's where you're in a relationship with more than one person. but it's not like an open relationship or cheating because everyone in the relationship is dating each other."
tyler's heart swelled at the new information, excited to know that this wasn't as uncommon as he had originally thought. knowing that brendon and josh weren't weirded out by the topic made him even happier, feeling as though this could possibly work.
josh resumed tattooing himself and brendon brought his hands to tyler's own, lacing their fingers together as he traced his knuckles. it was quiet in the room, for the exception of the hum of the music, but it was a comforting silence. it was the kind that you fell into when you reflected on a situation with warm hearts and butterflies in your stomach.
tyler was whipped for josh and brendon, there was no question about it, and although it made him feel that much more normal he was terrified. he wanted things to work out, but in a way he also didn't. he hated the thought of leaving them behind if something ever happened. he hated the thought of hurting them, breaking their hearts and leaving them alone. he just wanted them to be happy. deep down he knew that they would be happy with him.
so when he looked up and made eye contact with brendon, his heart thumped rapidly in his chest and he felt like a middle schooler with a crush, wanting nothing more than to spend his time in brendon's arms, with their limbs tangled and lips moving in sync in the most caring of ways.
his gaze then diverted to the yellow haired boy and all he could think about was the way his skin tingled wherever josh would touch, and how he gave off that stereotypical punk vibe but in reality he was just a big goof who would do anything to make tyler happy, which never failed to make the brunette feel special.
he couldn't have asked for better friends, but his mind reminded him that no, they're more than friends. at least that's what he wanted, and he really hoped those feelings were reciprocated.
he unlaced his fingers from brendon's and grasped the raven haired boy's cheeks, pulling his face down to his own as he delicately brought their lips together, the kiss nothing but pure affection. tyler almost forgot that they weren't alone until he heard a small applause coming from across from them.
"damn, that was really hot," josh chuckled and tyler sat up with a roll of his eyes, crawling over to josh and pressing their lips together, the yellow haired boy immediately kissing back as he ran his fingers through tyler's hair. that was the main difference between brendon and josh; brendon was more gentle and hesitant with his actions, and josh was much more physical and confident. it gave tyler the perfect mix of both personalities and he absolutely loved it. when they pulled back tyler scooted back and gave his friends an expectant look.
"are you guys gonna kiss now, or what?"
josh raised his eyebrows at brendon to which he responded with a shrug, brendon going over to josh and connecting their lips together. tyler's smile became twice as large at the sight, happiness flooding his system. this could actually work. he wasn't being crazy with thinking he could be with two people at once.
so as his friends pulled away with grins on their faces, tyler could only think of one word. one question.
