A Long Day

I hear the faint buzzing of my alarm from my watch, the batteries in it had been wearing out for days now but hopefully I would find some replacements soon. My bones ached all over, from not being able to sleep well. It was my own fault I should have searched around a bit more for a better place to rest. I pushed open the trunk and stretched my arms out. The sun was high in the sky, I turned to look at my watch, and it read 10:54am. I had set it for 10:00am and it would buzz until I turned it off manually.

That was strange, I thought I'd wake up to its first alarm although I don't remember what time I had drifted off so I might have been too tired to wake up. I shrugged and got up out the trunk. I looked around for any walkers, none were in sight. I turned back to the trunk of the car and grabbed my backpack. Rummaging through it I finally grasped onto one of my cereal bars. I took it out then had a look to see how many I had left. After literally emptying the pack I had discovered no more bars.

I looked at the last remaining bar with sadness. I could eat it now to fix my hunger and boy was I hungry or I could wait to eat it. I had eaten a whole bar the night before and it would be practical to save it. My stomach growled. I was definitely hungry but I had to save my last ration for now.

I packed everything back in my backpack neatly then picked up my belt and buckled it around my waist. Then grabbing my hunting knife and slotting it between my belt and jeans. A gust of wind hit me from behind, blowing my lose pony tail to the side of my face. It looked a mess, bits of hair tangled and hair frizzing. I had washed a week back but that still didn't stop it turning out like this. I would have brushed it but I had lost my brush to a walker guess they needed it more than I did I joke to myself.

I sigh, worrying about the state of my hair was such a trivial thing. After doing a mental check that I had everything I started making my way along the road. I could feel the air getting colder but not quite cold enough that I would put my jacket on. Leaves rolled along the empty road making small scraping noises along the surface. I smiled, pre apocalypse this happened all the time leaves falling and making their way along the pavements. It was the sign autumn was here and I loved autumn more than anything.

My thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of what I decided to call a really bad throat infection. I pulled the knife from my waist and surveyed the area for the location of the noise. I saw them emerge from the trees, two walkers both looked quite intact meaning their death could have been recent, which raised another question were there people nearby? I snapped back the walkers were close now I moved round to pick one of them off. I lifted my knife up and forced it down into the first walker's skull. I stepped back and prepared myself for the second one again lifting my knife up and plummeting into their skull and then yanking it out.

I wiped my knife off on their clothes then put it back on my waist. I then walked straight off, normally I'd scavenge them to see if they had any goods but the thought of actual live people nearby was unnerving. I had a few bad run-ins with groups and didn't want to risk running into another bad group.

After a while of walking of a fairly fast pace I saw a sign for a town up ahead. A part of me worried what if the people were here but then you were also hungry and needed to see if there was any food there. Despite your doubts you decided to risk it.

The town was within sights now but night was also dawning. I looked at my watch to see it was 4:40pm, almost six hours I had been walking. My stomach let out a loud growl. I swung my backpack off my back and pulled out my last cereal bar. I devoured the entire thing with ten seconds not even leaving a crumb. I felt slightly better now after finally eating. I took a swig of water before walking on. It was going to be too dark soon and it's better to scavenge in the daylight.

I walked up to a nearby car and opened the trunk, it seemed cosy there was a few blankets in there so it should make my sleep more comfortable. I took my bag off then my knife and placed it somewhere I could get it quickly if need be then I removed my belt. I got in the trunk then pulled down the trunk top just before the latch.

I took off my watch and set an alarm for the next day since I was going to sleep so early today I'd say 5:00am should be good. A full 12 hours sleep that's a treat in my books but I doubt I'd sleep through the night. I rested my head on a folded blanket and to no surprise it took a while to drift off but around 11pm I finally fell asleep.

I open my eyes to see the trunk wide open and a towering giant leaning over me. "Well it's about fucking time you woke up".
