The guards struggled to bring in patient #42 due to the weights that were bound to his feet. They groaned as they hiked him up to the shackles, and the weights seemed to pull him down a bit.
Kris had the complexion of a cold man. He hardly spoke, and when he did his voice seemed just as cold.
"How are you?" I ask as an attempt at making small talk.
Kris tilts his head to looks me in the eye for a moment, before scoffing and looking back down.
"Not that talkative type? That's okay." I smile at him. He doesn't bother looking at me.
As I wash down his body, I notice how bruised his ankles are from carrying the weights.
"Does that hurt?" I ask, motioning to them.
Kris scoffs, "What do you think?"
I nod at him and decide not to try to make any further conversation.
He doesn't speak again until I'm walking to the table to grab his plate.
"How's Tao?"
"Who?" I turn around, eyebrows raised.
"Tao. You spoke to him earlier." He says coldly.
"Ah, yes. Tao's fine. Sassy, but fine."
Kris chuckles, "That sounds like him." Turns out he can actually smile.
I smile as I walk over to him, "Are you and Tao close?"
"We're all close." He replies, returning to being cold.
"Yes, but are you two particularly close compared to the others? Like Kai and Kyungsoo for example."
"Kai and Kyungsoo are close because they fuck. Tao and I aren't like that. He's like my little brother."
I stare at him for a moment as I take in what he just said, before simply saying "Oh."
Kris chuckles again before looking up at me, "Can I eat now?"
I shake my head to pull myself together, "Oh, yes of course."
He doesn't say anything else as he eats, however he seems to have relaxed a bit.
Kris returns to being cold when the guards walk in. They again struggle to lift him due to his weights, which he appears visibly unimpressed with.
