After a few minutes, many German soldiers could be seen with a queue of malnourished men and women, who were too frail to walk with steady steps. Most of them had graying untidy hair, were very weak and thin, and were covered in rags, despite the cold weather.
Suddenly, a figure fell; I couldn't make out if it was a man or a woman; and could not stand up again, even after trying. The person was immediately shot down by a soldier. The body writhed in pain, was shot again, in the head this time, and lay motionless. I had heard about the Death marches, in which, the captives of the Nazis, which mainly consisted of the Jews, were made to walk for long distances without food and water; in course of transporting them from one concentration camp to another, or any other place that they were being taken to.
Just then, I found a face which seemed vaguely familiar to me. I tried my best to remember whose face it was, and suddenly, realisation dawned on me.
She was my mother!
