Madison, Georgia.
The rain didn’t stop pouring; the only light for that brutal night came from the full moon. The wolf’s howl that came from the distance mingled with a human groan. Chained against an old willow tree was a tall, lean man. At a glance the chains appeared normal, but beneath each link the man’s skin was burning.
The man wasn’t alone. Two girls stood before him, their voices ringing through the night air. “Evocatio Valcyriarum Contubernalia Gladiaria!” With the enchantment, the man’s groan became even louder.
“Stop it….Please,” he begged, his eyes watering.
"Evocatio Spiritualis de Septendecim Valcyriis Mortiferis... " The second girl continued.
The man shrieked, his eyes flickered from sapphire blue to scarlet as he struggled against the chains.
The witches’ eyes were glowed beneath their eyelids; they gripped their hands together, digging their nails into the skin. Their voices became one. "Evocatio Spiritualis de Undetriginta Salamandris Lanciferis...! Hexagramma et Pentagramma, Malos Spiritus Sigillent! Lagena Signatoria!" Thunder rattled through the air as the witches came to the end of their spell. The witches opened their eyes and let their arms drop. The rain died down and an eerie silence followed.
Suddenly, a ring of fire exploded around the captive man. He didn’t make a sound; he was too exhausted to even scream. He bit his tongue and pulled against the chains, but they didn’t budge. The witches stepped into the moonlight. It was like looking at a mirror image. The girls were exactly alike in every way asides from their dress sense. One of the twins was dressed in a bright yellow gown, while the other one sported a gentle white colour scheme.
The twin in yellow stepped forward; she murmured an incantation and the fire began to inch towards the man. “Pathetic vampire!” she scoffed, her face centimetres from the man’s face., “What makes you think that my sister will love you, uh?” she shook her head in disgust.
The man titled his head up and glared at the witch, he narrowed his eyes and they became red. Then he looked to the second witch and eyes returned to a normal crystal blue. Even through the smoke and darkness he could see that she was crying.“Then why is your sister crying over me?” he replied softly.
The witch spun around and glowered at her sister. She watched as her sister hastily wiped away the tears. When the witch turned back to face the man a low hiss escaped her lips.“Se Dissolvant Circumstantia Falsa!" she chanted sinisterly. The man groaned in pain and squirmed against the tree. A gooey red scald appeared on his right arm.
“Enough, Selena!” The second twin finally spoke, rushing forwards and placing her arm on her shoulder, “You’re wasting time, we have to be quick,” she said, trying to hide the real reason she wanted her sister to stop.
Selena threw another disgust look at the man before leaving him and walking back to their original position. The second twin followed her; she tried not to look at the man. The pair began to chant once more.
Everything happened in less than a second.
Both girls were chanting louder and louder, completely consumed by their spell. The man was shrieking and screaming profanities at the girls. Then, breaking through all of the noise was a gunshot. At first Selena thought it was a new storm, but then she realised that her sister was no longer chanting.
“Talia?” she said panic rising in her voice, she looked around frantically. Her sister lay on the floor, blood pumping from her stomach. She looked around but she couldn’t see were the gunshot had come from. Her sister coughed and spluttered on the floor drawing Selena’s attention.
“Talia!” Selena ran toward her sister and skidded to a stop in the mud, ”Oh my God Talia,” she gasped. There was so much blood. Selena scooped her sister into her arms and lightly tapped her cheeks, “Wake up Talia! For God’s sake, wake up!”
The man looked on, fear in his eyes, “Check her pulse!” he yelled impatiently.
Selena put her fingers to Talia’s neck, “She’s barely breathing,” she choked.
“Shit!” He cursed. Who? Who wanted to kill Talia? “Let me free, Sel. I can help her; I can give her my blood,” he shouted.
“No, No way! I’d rather let my sister die then turning her into vampire, Leon.” Selena shook her head.
“Don’t be stupid Sel. I’m not going to change her into a vampire, my blood will heal her! Listen to me once, please. Talia is important to me too,” the man begged.
Selena didn’t respond, she was hunched over her sister’s body, trying to protect her from the cold.
“Sel, please,” Leon begged once again.
Selena didn’t have any other choice; reluctantly she muttered the spell, “Refectio!"
Within a second the fire gone and the chains slid from around him. In a heartbeat he was at Selena’s side, he bent down beside her. Leon couldn’t hear Talia’s heartbeat.
“No, no this is not happening.” he bit his wrist and moved it to her lips, “Come one Talia, drink this. C’mon, C’mon.” Leon forced Talia’s lips apart and shoved the wound against her mouth. It stung but Leon barely noticed it, he was concentrating on getting Talia to swallow. It had been over five minutes but Talia still hadn’t moved.
Leon growled and threw punches at the ground, “Talia, please be alive.” he shook her shoulders fiercely, but nothing happened. She was gone. Selena hid her face and shied away from the body. Leon held his head up, and for the first time in a long time, a tear passed down his cheek.
“Talia,” he whispered.
