September 19th, 2014It was the day that Luke's foster parents were supposed to be licensed to adopt him. I knew that since the day he told me that John wanted to adopt him in the first place, that things would go down hill from here. Luke's never been one for good luck either, I've known that, too.
But, Luke had a plan. And it wasn't even well thought out. It was simple and it got to the point, yet somehow I was involved.
If these hints weren't good enough, I was going being introduced to John so Luke can talk him out of it. Part of me was freaking the fuck out, while the other half was chanting over and over again for hope that it would work. I was already sat in the passenger side of Luke's car, listening to him sing and drum along to a song on his playlist, "For Always Forever" by Every Avenue. He told me that it calmed him down, and I wasn't surprised that he chose it for this moment. It was like Billy and Nick's, "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette in The Internship.
We arrived at the falling apart house around 4:30, since we came straight from school and we were once again in those dumb ass cruddy uniforms. I hated them, so much.
"Let's do this," Luke muttered under his breath. Our hands found each other once we met on the outside of the car, and we walked up to the front door with a good slow speed. "Oh God, help me."
"I don't think He's going to do much help in this situation, Luke. Right now, it's all about you," I assured him, and he nodded, probably not feeling one bit assured.
The house felt cool, much cooler than usual as we stepped into the small space. I noticed that it was cleaner, though, and Luke's picture was back up on the bookshelf. There was no sign of the cat, and the couch was mended.
"John?" Luke's smooth voice echoed throughout the entire home. "I need to talk to you! I mean- if you're here!"
"If I wasn't, that'd be pretty awkward," said a much more mature voice from the kitchen. Out came a tall man, late 30's with a scruffy one month beard and a small gut. "Who's his young lady?" He was wearing jeans and a plaid shirt, which was probably something he usually never wore.
"Paige," Luke said sternly.
"Nice to meet you Paige?" Yeah, it was more of a question. "You've probably heard about me, I'm Luke's dad, John."
"No you're not," my boyfriend scoffed. "Paige is my girlfriend, I told her about my backstory, obviously."
"Girlfriend?" chuckled the older man. "Well you got yourself a real beaut on your hands, Lucas."
"I know," Luke smiled at me but the smile soon turned back into a frown as he turned back to John. If we're being totally honest here, I was expecting him to look really ugly, and well, he's not all that bad. I just hate him for what he did to Luke. "Anyways, we do need to talk." We both sat on the couch, yet I sat further so I wasn't mostly in this conversation. I was here for support.
"Alright," said John as he sat on the tan chair. "Shoot."
"Well, I'm guessing you already got the license for adoption..." started Luke in a monotone voice. "But I'm just gonna come right out and say it-"
"Now Luke-"
"Don't interrupt him, John," another voice intruded.
"And don't interrupt ME Margret, I'm sorry she's just-"
"Are you Paige?" The woman seemed a lot younger than I expected. She had long blonde hair, bright blue eyes, almost like Luke's but her skin was aged, yet her face wasn't. "I'm Maggie."
