~ Hermione Granger

She awoke with a start, her brow coated with a thin sheen of luminescent sweat. Hermione was having nightmares again. She sighed, rolling to her side wincing slightly. Reaching out into the draped darkness she groped around for the small clock that lay among her school paraphernalia on her bedside table.

Another audible sigh escaped her. Merlin knew she would be unable to sleep past three am. She had barely slept for four hours, just like every night since the start of term. She knew coming into her sixth year that her coursework would be heavier and sleepless nights spent at the library would be customary.

What had surprised her was how she had thought that maybe the nightmares and the sleepless nights would fade once she returned to school.

Wistful thinking. She was being a fool really, hoping things would return to the normal she craved, knowing in her heart ever since the Triwizard Tournament ended that dark times lay ahead...

As soon as that last thought hit her, her heart twanged painfully. She thought about Harry, her best friend.

He didn't have a normal. This was his life. This was how he had lived, how he had suffered. He had lost so much, the pain resonating heavier considering how little he had had to start with. With Sirius gone, he had fallen into a numb labyrinth, an oblivious existence of sorts. He was quieter now, the Quidditch-loving jet-black haired boy replaced by a shell of a young, exhausted adult. His green eyes endless canals of misery.

She wanted to break into his shell, release the strong natural leader that lay sheltered inside. She missed the ease she felt walking beside him, the easy confidence that used to pour out of him in waves, affecting everyone around him. Yes, people had changed.

The absence of Harry's spirit had changed Ron too. Ron, her boyfriend. The boy, once Harry's slightly irritating nevertheless lovable friend had hardened like black licorice. His strong personality driven by a molded mindset coming to the forefront just as Harry's had receded. Their relationship had seemed inevitable, her innocent crush and his interest sparked, after her tryst with Victor Krum leading to a rush of words, some heated moments and then this. The beginning had felt good even if rushed. She welcomed the feeling of safety, began to draw it from any available source like moisture pulled by dry desert roots. And Ron was her source with Harry unavailable.

Her confidence had crumbled after the battle in the Ministry, after Sirius. Fear followed her like a hungry dog. She had spent the summer locked in her room, sitting on her window ledge looking out for any sign of the impending danger. If Sirius, the handsomely arrogant seasoned warrior had been taken, surely kids like her and Harry stood no chance...... her irrational mind argued.

A draft of wind streaming through a crack in the Gryffindor tower windows shocked her out of her messy tangle of thoughts. She sat up on her bed and shook her mane of messy hair out, resembling a mahogany large wet Newfoundland dog. Pulling on her socks, she grabbed her bathrobe that sat draped on her chair. Sticking her wand into her curly updo, she padded down the stairs heading into the common room. Crossing the cluttered floor, she hesitated before the Fat Lady's portrait. Turning around she stared at the boy's dormitories, in the direction of what she knew to be Ron's bed. Her brow creased in tension. She stood still for a couple of moments...

Exhaling, she relaxed her shoulders and continued out of the common room towards the Prefect's bathrooms deciding to spend the remainder of the early hours of the morning drowning her thoughts in the scented baths before breakfast in the Great Hall.
