What Had Happened...

Celeste went to Liza's house after school. Liza never liked her, but last night, she had woken her up, crying about something. Celeste promised to come over, and kept her promise. Liza was in a corner in her room, and shuddered when she came in. Celeste tried to think of what could have possibly happened to her to make her fear the door opening.

"What's up?" She said, and Liza sat up a bit straighter.

"I'm sorry I woke you up," She said. "I was going through my contacts, trying to find a friend I could trust, and I realized that I don't have any." Celeste felt sad, but was still confused.

"So," she said as she sat down on the bed. It was pretty comfortable. "How did you get my number?" Liza grinned apologetically.

"Do you remember Will?" Celeste's eyes widened. "Yeah, it was a dare. I'm sorry. For everything. I haven't been nice to you, and I'm surprised that you even came." Celeste shrugged it off, and the tension left the room.

"Liza," Celeste, said with a nervous finality. "What's wrong?" Liza took a deep breath, and started.

"Well, you know how Jason was throwing a party?" Celeste shook her head. "Well, there was a party. And, well, Jason had asked me to be his date. Which I thought was so cool because he's so hot. Anyway, he had asked me to take a ride with him, and then, he...." Celeste was beside her in a second, comforting her any way she could. The statement didn't need to be finished, the silence said enough. Liza cried for a long time, but Celeste didn't care. The friendship that used to have was there again, almost like magic. The fight that they had, just didn't seem to matter. Celeste was there for her friend, and that's what mattered.

"What happened to him?" Celeste said after a few minutes.

"I called Dad, and he arrested him. He wouldn't talk to me, though. He won't look at me, now. It's like, he's...embarrassed. Celeste, why is he embarrassed that I was hurt?" Her tears flowed again, and Celeste tried to comfort her, but was at a loss for words. Nothing seemed to matter. She had done a middle-school report on what happened to girls who felt that their fathers didn't love them. It wasn't a good outcome. But, she didn't know what to say.

"Liza," she said after much thought. "Would-would you come to church with me and Kyle sometime? I want you to meet somebody." Liza nodded slowly, and then again confidently, and Celeste smiled. "Until then, I want you to think about something. If he went that far, you know you're not ugly, so don't think that."

"Yeah."Liza said. "I'm not ugly. I'm okay, right? I mean, it's not like I've done anything you have, so at least some guys actually want me, instead of dating me to make me feel better." Liza didn't mean it to hurt, but it did. It hurt alot. And Celeste quickly excused herself, texted Kyle, and went home.

Two Hours Later.

Celeste was in worse condition than Liza was when Kyle walked into her room. The text he had received scared him, and he had dropped everything and left. Now, he walked slowly to her bed, and sat down on the edge of her bed. She didn't look at him. They had been together for three months, and he always did something sweet. But now, she doubted his reason.

"What's wrong?" He said, getting right to the point. "Did something happen at school that I didn't see or hear?" She just shook her head. He got up and walked to her. She was standing in front of her irror, tears pouring down her face. She kept trying to stop them, but the more she tried, the worse they got. He wrapped his arms around her, and she pushed him off. He took the hint and stood a few feet back.

"Kyle, why are you with me?" She said, and Kyle shook his head, knowing where this was going to go. School friends sucked. They could tear you down with the same words that they used to build you up the day before. He came closer, look at her eyes in the mirror, and spoke softly.

"Because nothing would make me happier." She turned around and stared at him.

"Liar." She said. "What's the real reason?" He looked at her, with as much of a warm face as he could find. That had hurt.

"Because I love you." She was about to cut him off, but he raised his voice and spoke over her. "Don't go there. I love you, and there's nothing you can do to change that." She nodded, and sat down on her bed. He turned around, and crossed his arms.

"Why would you want to be with me?" She said, and he realized that he had a chance. "I'm...ugly, and a terrible girlfriend. I-"

"No, you're awesome. You're brilliant, and caring, and creative, not to mention absolutely gorgeous. You-"

"I'm not gorgeous." She said, with a sadness that made him lose some of his happiness. He sat down next to her, and waited. "Liza said that because she hadn't done what I've done, guys would actually want her, not just date her to make themselves feel better."

"Well, she probably said that as an unintentional observation. It wasn't on purpose. Yes, it probably was what she thinks, but that doesn't mean anything." Celeste was confused and asked why. He smield and took her hand. "You told me last week that my opinion was the only one that matters." She started laughing.

"You always know how to make me smile." She said as she leaned her head on his shoulder. "And I know you care. I just...I'm not used to people caring. Nobody wants me."

"Well, I do." Kyle said immediately. "And so does God. We both agree that you are awesome." She turned away and he began to whisper in her ear. "God wants you more than I ever did. Way more. Once you realize that, and you accept Him, you will experience more love and acceptance than I could ever give you." She looked at him, and went to kiss him, but he stopped her.

"Why won't you kiss me?" She asked. He blushed a little and mumbled something. "What?" She asked, and he said it again.

"I don't want to mess up. I've done almost everything right, and I don't want to mess up, now." She smiled at his shyness, and made him look at her.

"You won't mess up. Kiss me." He hesitated, and then leaned in. When their lips met, something magical happened. Neither could explain it, but both loved it. It was better than winning the lottery, better than summer vacation. It was. Simply. Amazing.

Later, when the two said goodbye, Celeste informed Kyle that her friend would be coming to church sometime soon. He said okay, and left. She watched him leave, so happy that he was hers.
