"...so, because Satan is Jesus' rival, he will fight to get you away from God. Anything he can do, he will try. That's why the Bible says wear the full armor of God." Celeste nodded. She had asked Kyle about something their youth pastor had said the night before. She wasn't a Christian yet, but ahe was trying. A little. It just seemed like...too much commitment for her right now.
"What happens if he wins?" She asked, and kyle smiled. They opened their lockers, which were next to each other, and started getting their stuff together to leave.
"Well, he can tear you away from God, but Jesus will always fight and rescue you, but only if you want to be rescued. He gave us all free will, so, if we don't want Him, He won't push His way into our lives. He wants us to live the way we want, but only if it's with Him. He says that He's a jealous God, and wants us to worship only Him. But, we don't always do that. Alot-"
You do." Celeste cut him off. "I don't know any kid as good as you. You're a good Christian." He smiled sadly. Celeste closed her backpack, and put it on. Kyle had less homework, but he studied all the time. She wasn't sure if she should be jealous of the time he spent with his books, or glad he did.
"I wish that were true," he said. "Even I mess up. I'm human, like everybody else. I make mistakes, too. Big ones." Celeste dropped it, and they walked out of the school and headed for the sidewalk. Now that the weather was nicer, Kyle liked walking instead of driving to and from school. Celeste just liked the extra time. She didn't really care. "So," Kyle said after the awkward silence got too much. "When is...your friend coming?" She shrugged.
"She hasn't said. I want her to come when they have that band I like back. Kyle smiled.
"I see they made an impact on you." She nodded enthusiastically.
"A big one. You know, ever since my Grandfather died, I lost my self-worth. He was...everything to me. But you keep telling me that god loves me. And, honestly, I'm starting to believe it."
"Good." Kyle said, then stopped. Both of them had been so drawn in, they didn't see the guy with the knife coming to them. He walked with a smug grin, smiling and brandishing his knife. Kyle subconsciously put himself between Celeste and the guy. He smiled, but it never reached his cold, calculating eyes. "Can I help you?" He asked.
"Yeah," the guy said as he pointed the knife at Kyle. "I'm gonna take the girl, and you're going to do nothing." Kyle's smile disappeared, and the guy's smile widened. "And don't think about trying to fight me. I know how to use this.I've watched you two walk home for the last few weeks." Kyle's eyes burned with anger at himself for being so stupid. He had seen the guy watching them, but figured he was just a routine freak. Now, he watched with an unchanging expression as the guy tried to reiterate himself. "Did I not say I'm taking the girl?" He asked, pointing the knife at Kyle's throat.
"You did," he responded. "I'm just not going to." He blocked out Celeste's plea to do what the man said, and looked into his opponent's eyes. The point of the knife pushed a little deeper, but Kyle didn't budge. The guy got angry. "Listen kid, if you try and fight me, you will have the fight of your life. I know way more than you do. And I'm bigger and stronger." Kyle felt the point dig deep and blood ran down his neck. He channeled the pain into anger, and the anger into strength and focus. He grabbed the guy's hand, pushed it away, and bent it. He stepped forward, not wanting to hurt Celeste if he fell, and was blinded to the punch that hit his jaw.
It hurt, but he repeated his cycle of strength, and attacked. He grabbed the free wrist, bent it past a ninety degree angle, and pushed. The guy screamed in pain, and fell down. Kyle took another step and waited. He would fight fair. Celeste took out her phone and called the cops, then backed up against the fence guarding the school. She had not known that Kyle could fight, but she knew enough to stay out of his way when he was ticked off.
The guy got up, and swung with his knife. It grazed Kyle's arm, and he smiled. He took the opportunity to land a kick to the kid's chest. Kyle took the hit, grabbed the guy's foot, and twisted it. His opponent had no choice but to turn around. Kyle pushed, but the guy regained his balance, flipped over Kyle, and headed to Celeste after knocking him over. Celeste screamed, and Kyle's body boosted him with adrenaline.
The guy went over to Celeste, pinned her arms, and kissed her. She bit his lip, and the next thing he knew, he was on the ground. the kid kicked his side and he lost air for a second. "You touch her again," he heard. "And you die." He rolled over, got up, and swung. The kid blocked his hand, put it behind his back, making him gasp in pain. His face went into the chain-link fence. He heard the sirens, and lowered his head.
Twenty minutes later.
Celeste stood next to Kyle, sitting on the back of a firetruck. He had fought really good, actually, and it made her smile. Apparently, she was worth his three cuts. He didn't know he had gotten cut a third time, but he didn't care. She asked him how he was doing, and he replied that as long as she was okay, he was great.
Kyle walked Celeste home, and they talked more about God. Kyle made the concept he was talking about earlier by liking it to the fight he had. It made sense. As she laid down, her phone went off, and Liza said the next time they went to church, she would come. She relayed the information to Kyle, and prayed for the first time in a while.
"God," She said, nervously. She had never done this before. "If You really do love me like Kyle said, will you show me? I don't believe You. I want to, but don't. I'm so used to being hurt, and I feel like the second I trust You...or Kyle, I'll get hurt. So, if you can, make me believe You. Goodnight."
She shut off her heater, and closed her eyes. That night, she had the most a amazing dream she had ever had before.
