Goodbye!

A year.

That's how long you've been living with Toriel.

You and she had grown closer over that time, living together in the Ruins. You had even managed to make friends with some of the monsters living around you, however..... tentative the relationships were. Your best friend, however, was a small yellow flower named Flowey. He was the one truly nice monster you've met, though he wasn't too fond of Toriel. However, you were starting to see the kinder side to her more and more. She hadn't even had one of her bad days in months.

You were cooking some bread in the kitchen, just taking it out of the oven. Just because you liked Toriel, doesn't mean that you would suddenly start eating food cooked by someone else. *You hear the sound of hundreds of language arts teachers, editors, book critics, and certain fanfic writers attempting to repress their rage.* Just then, Flowey popped up through the ground.

"(Y-Y/N)!" Flowey said, "Quick! Co-come with me! A human has fallen in the underground!"

You drop the bread pan you were holding in shock. Luckily, you were holding it over the sink, so it didn't drop very far.

"Where is it?" You asked Flowey.

"F-follow me." He replied, disappearing into the floor. You ran outside, following him as he appeared at various places, showing you where to go. He led you to the entrance of the ruins, the large hole that humans had fallen down in the past. Lying there on the ground was a small child, they couldn't have been more than eight or nine years old. What really worried you, though, were the many injuries on their body.

You hurried over to them, carefully picking them up bridal style in your arms. As you began the long walk back to your and Toriel's house, you examined them. They had multiple cuts and bruises all across their body, and a possible concussion on their head. A quick whiff revealed them to be (whatever gender ya want them to be idk *shrugs*). You were worried there might have been some internal damage, but figured Toriel's healing magic could help deal with that.

Speak of the lady devil, as you were just reaching your house you passed Toriel on the way back from getting groceries. She gasped when she saw you holding a child, almost dropping her bag of food.

"Oh my goodness! Did another fall down?" She asked. You nod in response.

"Oh, we have to get them inside and heal them. Who knows what damage could have been done to them." Toriel said, rushing over the the house. She ran and put the groceries on the dining table, then hurried to your room, calling over her shoulder, "You do not mind if she uses your bed temporarily, do you?"

"No, it's fine." You say. When you enter your room, Toriel had already made up the bed. You laid the child down on it, tucking them under the covers. You walked out of the room and over to Toriel, who was sitting in her chair by the fire.

"Mom?" You asked, "Where are they going to sleep?" Toriel snapped her attention over to you.

"I do not know, child. Perhaps we could attempt to find an extra bed, or possibly you two could sleep in my bed while I sleep in yours. It would not be too difficult, we'd only have to-"

"Mom, why don't they sleep in the spare room?"

Toriel was silent for a minute.

"No, my child. I am sorry, but you know that room is off limits." She replied, visibly shaken.

"I know, but you never told me why. If it was dangerous, you could just renovate it or something. I could even take care of all of your chores while-"

"No, my child. That is final."

You look up at Toriel, and see her making one of her scary faces. You decide to spare your poor body from some burns and back off, your tail attempting the become one with your legs.

"O-ok, mom. I'll just, ah, continue baking some breadokbye." You ran to take refuge in the kitchen, knowing that you shouldn't disturb her for another hour or so once she got like that.

After about an hour or so, you went to check on the child. You opened the door quietly and peeked in, only to see them sitting up in bed and looking around confusedly. They looked over at the door and saw you peeking around the door frame.

     "Am I dead?" They asked.

"I hope not," you replied, "because that would mean I'm dead too."

You walk fully into the room, turning on the light in the corner. The human blinks their eyes a bit at the sudden light. You walk over to them, placing a slightly furry hand on their forehead to check their temperature. They reach up and touch your hand. You jump a bit but relax after a minute of them petting your hand.

"So soft." They said. You chuckle a bit.

"I suppose they are." You reply.

"Are you a monster?" They ask.

"No, I'm human like you. I just so happen to have dog ears and a dog tail."

"Why do you have ears and a tail? They're so cool, I want them!"

"I'd..... rather not talk about it."

"Okay." They say, shrugging. They stop petting you and start asking questions.

     "Where are we?"

"Underneath Mount Ebott. This place is known as the Ruins."

     "Who are you?"

"My name is (Y/N). I live here with Toriel."

     "Who's Toriel?"

"She's the caretaker of the Ruins. She's also the one that healed you."

     "What are the Ruins?"

"The Ruins are where we are now. They are the oldest part of the Underground, and are cut off from the rest of the underground."

     "Why?"

"Because the monsters outside the Ruins, and even inside, are terrible. They will attempt to kill you. I should know. Humanity is lucky they can't leave the underground."

     "Why can't they leave?"

"Long ago, there was a war between humans and monsters. Humans won, and sealed the monsters underground with a magic barrier. The only way to break the barrier is to use the power of seven human souls. The only way to get a human soul is to kill whomever falls down. They already have five souls. They would do anything to get either of ours."

"How would you know that they were like?"

"I was kept a prisoner of theirs for as long as I can remember. I guess they thought they didn't need to kill me just yet. They won't be so lenient with anyone else from now on."

     "How do I get out?"

"You do not want to. But if you must know, you can't. The only way would be to absorb the souls of a monster. Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to get one. Only Boss Monster souls would be strong enough to persist after death, and the only Boss Monster around, Asgore, is too strong to defeat."

Just then, you heard the beep from the oven signifying that the bread was done baking.

"I have to go now, okay?" You say to the child, "before I go, what's your name?"

     "Frisk," they answered.

"Okay, Frisk. Get some sleep." You say, walking out and closing the door behind you as they settled down for a nap.
