Somi found herself teaching in Seoul High. The very place where the dark memories lived. The corridors where she first became a bully. The cafeteria where she would push around Kim Samuel. The abandoned building she first asked Samuel to drop out.
The classrooms and the fields.
It's to remind herself of what she's done with her time. How much lives she ruined.
More like her punishment to herself more than a reminder. She never wanted to forget any part of it. Being here is like time travelling, you get to see who the bullies are, and the victims. Sometimes you get to stop it from happening, and sometimes you're to caught up with your own life that you'd walk past it.
High school, it was a fresh memory where she met this one special guy that wasn't supposed to last. That guy you used to follow around to stare at and then dream at night.
But it was actually a tragic story of a girl who was a coward, and nothing more special than that.
It was once upon a first day of school. You believe that one day you get to step out of those ugly jeans and plain worn out shirts. Get a beautiful sparkling dress and glass slippers, run towards the prince.
But you're not Cinderella, you happened to be the mean ugly stepsister. He wasn't the prince, he was a normal guy that you stepped on until he was crushed.
They all laughed and you laughed with them.
But you shouldn't have laughed too soon, because after using all the laughters left in you, here comes life to step on you, and it's not you who's laughing in the end.
After six years slaving here, she finally decided to let go. She knew that, that wasn't enough punishment but it was what he wanted. Another six years of her suffering and remembering everything that happened here.
Now that it's done, she can finally move to Canada and leave everything behind. It's time to turn to the next chapter now, the readers of the book are suffering as much as she is. Time to let the scars heal, enough adding some more.
"Miss Jeon! Do you have an umbrella." a student asked when she noticed Somi staring at the window, blanking out.
"N-no." she shook her head.
"Will you be okay?" she asked again.
"I'm fine, I'm good." Somi replied.
"I'll go ahead then." the student said before leaving her inside the classroom.
She didn't tell her students that she's going to leave today, because if she did, they would prepare a surprise. It would be a wonderful farewell, something she doesn't deserve. By now she pretty much accepted that she deserves sad goodbye like what she always gave Samuel.
When she leaves, she wanted to remember this place the same. There's nothing but a bad memory and a tragic story. There's no reason to go back, like how the others thought.
After she leaves, maybe six years was enough time to let go of the things in the past that she cannot change.
Maybe she can finally walk out without glancing back.
(Flashback)
"Even after you graduate high school, I wish you'd have six more years of Seoul High nightmares. I want you to see the hallways where you first bullied me. The cafeteria where you would pushed me on the ground. The abandoned building you first asked me to drop out. The classrooms and the fields. Everything. I want it to replay on your mind in a shutter speed." -Kim Samuel
