CORA:

"I love you," he whispered in my ear.

"I love you t-" I was about say it back when he interrupted me.

"I know," he said softly. "But..." my heart sank. "I have something else I want to say. I wanted to ask if you would maybe want to-"

I cut him off. I started screaming, and he started freaking out.

"Cora!" he screams, trying to calm me down as I collapse out of heartbreak. I thought that he was breaking up with me.

"CORA! CORA"

"CORA!!!" I jolted awake at the sound of my English teacher saying my name.

As I glanced around the room, I noticed that everyone was staring at me. "Cora?" my teacher said cautiously. "Maybe you should go home for the rest of the day? It doesn't sound like you got a lot of sleep. You look very tired indeed." She had a very worried look on her face. I vaguely noticed that someone was screaming. I jumped in panic when I realized that it was me, shutting my mouth immediately.

I nodded. "Of course, Ms Vaughan." I stood up and tried to leave the room as quietly as possible, but just as I reached the door, I tripped over my own feet. I could hear almost the whole class trying to stifle their laughter. Emphasis on the 'almost'. I could hear Ali, the most popular girl in school (who also hated me), giggling unnecessarily loudly, along with Ms Vaughan doing a very bad job at containing her chuckles. As I got back up, I could hear Ali continue to giggle while she whispered to the other kids around her. Most of the kids around her were the most unpopular people in the school, and I could tell just by the looks on their faces that they were overjoyed that she was simply TALKING to them.

I ran out of the door, down the hallway, and stopped right in front of the nurses office. As I regained my breath, I reached for the door handle. But then I stopped myself.

Did I really want to go in there? All the nurse could give me was pity, and that was the LAST thing I wanted. That was worse than bruises, worse than cuts, worse than abuse. Don't ask me why. Until I met Dallas, I had no idea. So I stopped myself from opening the door, and bolted towards the exit of the school. Even though it was only second period, I didn't want to be at school anymore. Not if it meant enduring the rumors that were sure to half already gotten to half the school by now about the English class fiasco. By lunch, I'd be as good as dead, and by the end of the day, I'd be in WORSE condition than dead.

I was about halfway home when I realized that home was worse than school. I skidded to a halt. I looked at my surroundings, and realized that I was in the middle of a forest, taking the shortcut from school to home. I glanced around, and finally spotted what I was looking for. I ran to the tree that I was eyeing, and climbed until I was at the very top, so high up that I couldn't clearly see the ground, but I could see the town and the rest of the small forest for miles around.

I was content, sitting quietly, and occasionally rocking back and forth on the branch I was sitting on, when I heard an unfamiliar voice below me.

"Well, hey there. Watcha doin all the way up there?" it asked.

I freaked out, and fell backwards off the branch, banging on new ones on the way down, until I finally hit the ground, passing out cold.
