Mrs.Mell giggled at her son, adjusting both of their thick framed glasses on both of their faces. Michael tilted his head as he laughed at his mother, who was carrying him snuggly in her arms. Where they were going, the 5-year-old couldn't be sure, but if his mom was there then that meant it would be safe. He laid his head against his mother's shoulder, curling up into a ball as they walked down the road.
"Almost there Mikey" she whispered calmly, bouncing her son on her hip to keep his happy for a minute. After that minute was up, Michael saw the building they were to enter. His eyes were wide and shiny as he happily looked at the sign to enter. It was a large blue sign, with glittery rainbow writing and pictures of unicorns and Dragons decorating it. He gave his mom a huge smile, causing her to laugh and walk into the colorful building with him. A woman was the first thing they saw, sitting behind a desk and smiling brightly. Her smile was large and likely forced, making the small child in Mrs.Mells arms feel uncomfortable.
"Hello, Mrs.Heere. I'm here to check Michael in" his mother spoke, still hugging her son against her side. She nodded and began typing on her computer, checking Michael in and nodding. Mrs.Mell smiled gratefully and walked her son into another room before setting him down on the plush green carpet. He watched as his mother leaned down, kissing his cheek and whispering that she'd be back later to pick him up from... school? His eyes widened in horror as she began to walk away from him, leaving the room and closing the door behind her.
He looked around the room, seeing all the other children playing with toys or just talking in different places. With a small sigh, Michael began to walk around the room, the other kids all awkwardly turning away from him. A small burning sensation began to well in the back of his eyes and he knew this meant he would begin to cry. He began to walk quicker before setting himself down and in the corner of the room, where no one would see him. With a small snivel, he began to cry, hugging his knees to his chest.
He rocked himself slowly, trying to copy how his mother would usually cradle him whenever he was crying. He didn't know where the adult here was, but they weren't helping him so he'd have to do it himself. He gently slid his glasses off of his face so that he could wipe away his tears with his baggy hoodie's sleeve. His eyes were beginning to get puffy so he bit his lip, trying to force it to stop. He didn't like how his eyes looked whenever they got red or puffy.
He was about to go look for the adult watching them, but before he could he felt a small hand on his shoulder. He looked back slightly, seeing a little boy looking down at him with a worried face. He was thin, wearing dark blue jeans and a light blue t-shirt. He had big blue eyes, dark curly hair and a small frown of confusion.
"A-Are you ok?" he asked, quietly sliding down the wall and sitting next to the boy. Michael frowned and shook his head no, allowing the new boy to scootch closer.
"Oh. I'm sorry. Um, I'm Jeremy. Who are you?" He questioned, trying to give his best comforting smile. Michael, in a moment of weakness, laid his head against Jeremy's shoulder, like he would do if it were his mother there with him.
"I'm Michael" he replied through his tears. Jeremy nodded at him began to play with his short brown hair. That was something his mother had never done, yet Michael found himself leaning into the other boy's touch and making a small noise of happiness. He hiccuped his way through his sobs as Jeremy sat with him and pet him gently.
They stayed that way until Michael's eyes were dry and he was just lazily laying with his head in Jeremy's lap. Michael figured Jeremy wasn't benefiting from helping him, so he really appreciated the act of kindness. But that was where he was wrong. Jeremy got to cuddle with a cute boy in his lap, how is that not a benefit?
They continued to cuddle and talk. Michael learned that Jeremy's favorite color was blue, and he liked dinosaurs more than dragons. That started a playful argument between the two young boys, and it ended with Michael giggling until his face matched his hoodie. They began to forget how long it had been when their mothers both appeared to pick them up and take them home. Michael smiled at the sight of his mother but refused to let go of Jeremy's hand. Mrs.Mell stared at them in awe, a smile spreading across her face. She went to mention how cute they were to Mrs.Heere, but she was just looking away in disgust.
"Let's go Jeremy" she ordered in a low voice. Jeremy's bottom lip began to quiver as he nodded. He pressed a quick kiss to Michael's cheek before being dragged away by his fuming mother. Michaels mom sighed, before scooping up her own child and walking calmly out the door. Michael didn't know if he'd ever go back to that 'school' place or for how long, but as long as Jeremy was there he was ok. He could survive those other kids being mean as long as he had his new best friend.
