Agnes sped back to the woods, curiosity brewing inside her. The fallen leaves refused to stop crunching, oblivious to her mental plea for them to shut up.

"Come, I want to have a chat with you about something."

Devan's voice. And who was the other person? She peeked around the side of the mahogany trunk, and saw Kyle. What was happening? They were strolling up a small hill, with a meandering stream snaking on its side.

She tailed them, sneaking behind them. A while later Devan leaned against a tree, while Kyle glared daggers at him. Agnes ducked behind a boulder, listening.

"I just wanted to tell you that I will be the one to have her, so you can wave your dreams goodbye. Don't have fake hope," Devan snickered at Kyle. Agnes knew immediately they were chatting about her. But she barely knew Devan! How dare he say such a thing.

"Agnes has always known that I care about her more than anything else. She won't accept you," Kyle seethed, fury smoking off of him.

"Oh really. What if I make lies? Frame you? Will she still like you then?" Devan laughed.

Evil, untrustworthy, Agnes thought.

"I don't really care if she likes me or not, as long as she's happy. But I will not allow you to influence her. Back off Devil—I mean Devan," Kyle hissed, clenching his fist.

Oh Kyle. Agnes's chest constricted, you know that I like you. I know you care.

"No," Devan answered coldly. There was a sound of ringing steel as a katana was unsheathed. He pointed it at Kyle's neck. "I think you're the one who should back off. Believe me, you'll regret it if you don't." Devan sheathed his katana, smiled triumphantly, and teleported away.

Was that a threat? Agnes hurried home, thinking of Kyle and his safety.

"Mom! I'm home!"

"Not again Agnes," her mother put her hands on her hips, her bracelets jingling, "You got another lie to tell me? Naughty little girl!"

"I was at the library," Agnes insisted, "there were so many good books! Most of the authors used code names though. There was Fallen by Glimmer, Skyflyer by Doge, Breaking Down by Nicole, A New Life by Ling, The Glitch by Juliette, Shift by Cataphant..."

"Be quiet sis! Those are all books you've already read and have in your room," Ethan piped up.

Agnes ignored him. "...The Sorcerer Flies By Midnight by EstherM8, Spirits of the Forest by QuietWater, M.G.T by Yara, Broken Bonds by SPACE ALIEN, Moving Target: Number 33019302 by BlackRaven, and my favourite book of all time, Shapeshifter by Evening."

Agnes skipped out of the living room and escaped to her bedroom. She loved to stare out her window at sunset, as the auriferous sunlight caked everything. As silhouettes of birds flitted at the horizon, and the forest sounds subsided. As she was able to think over the day's events in the coziness of her world.

Kyle really did like her, more than Agnes had thoughts. The truth was, yes, she like him back. But then there's Devan getting in the way. Devan is far more powerful than both of them, and could pose a real threat to Kyle. If Agnes wanted to protect Kyle, she might have to be with Devan.

Anything, Devan. As long as Kyle is safe. That was her last train of thought before the voice came into her head.

Hello there. Having problems?

Yes, Agnes admitted.

Kyle is a generous person, and he would let you go if that means you would be happy. Be careful of Devan. He won't be letting you go easily. Don't get too close to him, but also it's  best you act like you like him. Otherwise, Kyle could be placed in danger.

Ominous words. How do you know this of them? Agnes wondered.

I know everything. With that, the voice withdrew.

CLANG!

Agnes threw open her locker door, sifting through her books. Her arms were loaded with homework, weighing her down. At least it was the end of the day, and she would be able to run from the chaos soon enough.

"Agnes?"

"Kyle!" Agnes spun around to face him, "Yes?"

"I need to talk to you," Kyle seemed uneasy. They walked out the school doors, and sauntered onto the sidewalk, then crossed the field.

"Agnes...do you think there's something...strange about Devan?" He coughed tentatively.

Of course I do. "Umm...no...not really," Agnes lied instead, "what is it about him that's got you so nervous?"

"Haven't you sensed it? There's just something that...that can't be..." Kyle bit his lip.

"That can't be...?"

"That can't be trusted."

DUN DUN DUN!!! So what do you think will happen next? To be honest, I don't know either...hehehehehehhe. We will just all have to wait and see...
