A bolt of slight trepidation blazed down her back.
A human girl with flowing brown hair and sweet hazel eyes stared back at her. Her skin was a smooth and flawless, and a beauty mark resided on the right of her upper lip. This figure...was familiar in an unexplainable way.
She approached the figure, bewilderment warring fear in her eyes. "You...you look familiar...have we met before?"
"Of course we have..." In a flash, the figure twisted into an angel-like creature. "This is how I really look. Agnes, I'll help you find what you need."
"But...but you don't even know what I need! How can you?" Her brows furrowed.
The angel chuckled. "Believe me...I can..."
Agnes reluctantly followed as the angel floated to the upper stairs. The spiralling staircase seemed to stretch beyond the sky, further than the blinking stars and luminescent moon. Agnes's legs soon became jaded, and as they climbed to the highest level of the tower, they were screeching in agony.
The souls in this level were different in a way. A kind of strange aura hummed at Agnes's ears, while the souls glowed a more brilliant glow than the ones in the lower level.
"Why are these souls brighter than the others?" Agnes wondered, her eyes astray.
"The brighter they glow, the more likely the chance of them reviving. This tower will have more levels as time goes by, and as time does, these souls's phosphorescence will recede."
"So that means these souls are of people who died recently?"
"Indeed. This soul here," the angle pointed to a soul right at Agnes's eye level, "belonged to a boy who lost his life for a girl. That day...many Warped Shapeshifters came back to their human form. The girl was said to free them from the Voice's manipulation, but she herself Warped, as she lost control," the angel met her eyes with understanding, "you should consider reviving this soul. I'm sure he still has many things he hasn't done yet..."
Agnes stared at the soul, watching its glistening surface. Within it, she could glimpse the rough outlines of a pair of sapphire eyes. Those eyes...they were too familiar. A headache was banging at her head, and she struggled to focus.
"Yes...I will then..." she managed to croak, the headache raging like wildfire in her head. The soulkeeper snatched a small box from the corner of the room, carefully placed in the soul, and balanced the box on Agnes's back.
Agnes thanked the angel, then left in a hurry. Confusion and doubt swamped her brain as she exited the gates of heaven. She lifted off and soared to find a quiet place in which she could try out her power. Through the islands of clouds, the sea shimmered underneath, veiled by mist. No wind disturbed the air, all was silent as ever.
She spiralled down to a small island in the sea, blooming with lush palms. She slid the box off her back and opened it. The small pulsing light tremored slightly, causing the box to shake.
How will I revive it? I've never done it before...
She gathered her strength and energy, directing it towards the soul. The soul began to float up, and that's when Agnes noticed there was a thin ice-like layer around it, which scintillated gold as the sun edged into the water. She focused to break the ice, concentrating her will. She imagined invisible hands clawing at the ice, and breaking it easily. With that image in her head, she willed for it to crack.
Open.
Open!
Merely a shiver lanced the outer shell. Agnes's forehead was beaded with sweat, trickling down the side of her neck. She remembered the pair of blue eyes, and reached for them with her hands.
OPEN!
The ice shattered to smithereens, raining to the ground. The soul trembled ominously, yeilding. Agnes pushed on, feeling energy and power drain from her as she granted it to the soul. With a one last burst of strength, she revived the soul and collapsed to the ground.
The soul began to deform, swirling in odd patterns. It shrunk and grew, wriggling and twisting, shiny radiantly all the while.
Until it finally took its right form.
