The family and Cathrine sat in silence at the dinnertable. It wasn't silent because they were enjoying the food it was an uncomfitable silence. Both Mary and Elizabeth threw anxious looks at their dad and step-mum. No one dared to say a word. Catherine was too busy scoffing all the food she could to notice the atmospere between her hosts. "We better take Cathrine home," the maid said to break the silence, "come on girls." The children eagerly left the table, happy to be away from the awkwardness.

After the kids had gone to bed, Alice went up stairs to get changed. When she was in her night dress, she heard a knock on the door. "Come in!" She called. It was Henry. "I sorry about what I said earlier," he appoligized, kissing her tenderly on the lips. "Its ok, so am i," she replied. They sat on the the edge of the bed chatting and laughing until it was time to go to bed. They kissed each other goodnight. Henry put his arm round Alice and they drifted off to sleep. Elizabeth and Mary, who had been watching to scene, quickly but quietly closed the door and sighing with relief wondered back into their rooms.
