Alan proposes to you and you have your engagement party
---
Walking into your flat, you sigh heavily and sadly as you hang your coat up, entering the living room to find mathematical papers scattered everywhere across the room. "Alan?" You call, looking around at the papers, some making sense while the rest were hieroglyphics. With your call, Alan comes from the washroom, again in his frenzied state, the same from last night.
"Christopher is simply not moving fast enough." He quick-fires, totally oblivious to your sad looks.
"We should talk." You start, sitting down, sadly.
Totally oblivious to what you're saying, he presses on. "Even with the diagonal board he'snot eliminating settings as quickly as -"
"Alan, I'm leaving." You decide to interrupt him, pursing your lips after speaking quickly.
"You just walked in." He stopped moving around the room, taking a moment to look back at you.
"Bletchley." You take a deep breath, trying to calm yourself because you knew it would kill him if you'd leave. You'd gotten so, so close over the few weeks that you knew each other. "It's my parents... I am twenty-five and I am unmarried and I am living alone... and they want me home."
"That's ridiculous." He says, shaking his head and waving his hand around. "You cannot leave. I- I won't let you. You are not leaving and that is that!"
"What am I supposed to do, Alan? I will not give up my parents. The world is burning to ash and they are my family; they want me home." You asked, standing up and waving your arms around dramatically.
"You have the opportunity here to make some actual use of your life -" Finally having enough, you decided to interrupt him.
"And end up like you? No thanks. I'm sorry you're lonely. I'm sorry no one likes you. But Enigma will not save you. Can you decipher that, you fragile narcissist? Or do you need me to fetch your precious Christopher for help?!" There's silence. Long, horrible silence. He looks as if you just slapped him across the face, which is what you basically just did. "I'm sorry." You whisper, looking down at your shaking hands as you tried to calm yourself.
"I want you to stay because I like you. I like talking to you." He looked you up and down, putting his hands on his head, he didn't want to lose you.
"I like talking to you, too, Alan."
"What if you weren't living alone? What if you had a husband?" He inquired, coming closer to you, almost smiling as an idea came into his head.
"You have one in mind?" You asked, rolling my eyes gently, but he was still somewhat smiling as he began to rush around the room. So you played along: "Hugh is terribly attractive, I'll give you that, but he's really not the marrying type..." You pause, staring at his intense gaze boring right into your soul. "Peter? He's so quiet..." Then it dawns on you as he fishes a piece of electrical wire from his pants pocket. "... Did you just propose to me?"
"It's the logical thing to do." Alan presses, shaping the wire into a ring.
"This is ridiculous."
"This is your parents, (Y/N). Wait, is your middle name Caroline... or Catherine?"
"(M/N)." You say, sitting yourself on your bed, trying to process what's going on.
"(Y/Full/N), will you marry me?" He asks, kneeling in front of you, putting his makeshift ring in front of you. You almost forget to react, like you're frozen in the moment. Sure, you'd developed small feelings for Alan throughout the process of Enigma. Then again, this was just for the fact of you staying at Bletchley. This wasn't true, but fuck it, right?
You take a deep breath and give him an honest answer.
--- TIME SKIP ---
"It's... beautiful?" One of your friends says, staring at the makeshift wire ring on your finger and trying her best.
"I know it's not an ordinary ring..." You look over at Alan, smiling dreamily as you did. He drinks with the rest of the team, looking the tiniest bit uncomfortable, but you understand that he's not a very social person. "... but who ever loved ordinary?"
You walk to the table and throw an arm around Alan, kissing him on the head as you were just the right height to. "Care for a dance?"
"No no, your fiancé can dance with you any time he likes. Now it's my turn." Hugh takes your hand, smiling as he did. Alan gave you a kiss on the hand as you walked away. Peter follows us, dancing with one of your friends as Hugh places one hand on your hip and begins to swing you around the room. So we dance around the room, chastely, sweetly as Alan and John are left alone to speak at the table.
(We're going to switch to Alan's POV so I can provide a bit of backstory to people who've not seen the movie)
Alan's POV
"What's the matter?" John asks after seeing my worried face as I watch (Y/N) and Hugh dance. She's laughing, having a great time as a tipsy Hugh swings my fiancé around the room.
"What if I don't fancy... being with (Y/N) in that way?" I ask, worried that someone might find me out.
"Because you're a homosexual?" John says softly, for my sake; I look round at him, surprised that he was able to figure it out. "I suspected. You're not quite as much of an enigma as you think you are. Or as much as Enigma is."
"Should I tell (Y/N) I've had affairs with other men?"
"You know, in my admittedly limited experience, women tend to be a bit touchy about accidentally marrying homosexuals. I think perhaps not spreading this information around might be in your best interest." The last thing I want to do is spread this information, the last time I did, I got hurt. Technically I didn't fully tell... Christopher about my love for him. He died before I could, also I don't think homosexuals are particularly well treated in our time frame.
"Having children, a family... I want that with (Y/N). I do. I just don't know if I can... pretend."
"You can't tell anyone, Alan. It's illegal. And Denniston is looking for any excuse he can get to put you away. This has to stay a secret, or trust me, they'll kill you for it." I know that John is right, of course he's right. They will kill me, and I know that I have to be careful with this. As I'm thinking, (Y/N) comes back over and gives me her hand and a sweet smile. With a final look back at John, I take her hand and she leads me onto the dance floor.
"Now it's your turn." She smiles, dancing around the room with me, making me smile - actually smile, which is something I haven't done in a while. She kisses my cheek as we continue to dance, laughing and having a great time - again, something I hadn't done in a long time.
