This was a very emotionally harrowing part for me in the movie because I have a friend who has cancer and one day she lost her meds, and I saw the full extent of agony she was going through, so this is quite difficult for me to write.
This is after he told you his plan (his plan was to swim out into the middle of the bay and drown himself before he went home so he could end it all).
James looses his meds bag and now - without any morphine - he writhes in agony while you and Davy try to calm him down.
---You're jerked awake by the sound of the man sleeping next to you screaming in agony. The sounds break your heart as you immediately shoot up, looking around desperately for him. And you saw him, which made every bone in your body ache as he called out your name. He was a sweaty mess, punching the ground in agony, looking for your support while the boys outside discussed frantically what was happening.
"James." You whispered, lacing one of your hands with his and the other in his hair, stroking it to calm him down. This usually worked during his bad times, but you knew this was different, this was going to be a lot harder to cure.
He squeezed your hand, still crying out in agony. "Fuck!" He said, voice strangling, writhing around beneath his sleeping bag, attempting to kick it off.
"Davy!!" You called out while you ran your fingers through his hair, using the other hand to grab a canteen of cold water beside you.
"I can't find his meds bag." You hear Davy say quietly, though just loud enough so that you could both hear it. It's muffled by the tent, but you can clearly see that James could here as he pursed his lips and whimpered through his closed lips. "He doesn't have any morphine left."
"I'm not... fucking deaf!" James called out while grimacing, squeezing your hand tighter and tighter.
"Shhh..." You shushed him quietly and lovingly, tears easily making their way into your eyes. He looked up at you with agony and desperation in his eyes, and for a moment you understood why he would want to go the way he did; to let the sea take him, to feel one last fight, even if it was the salt water in his lungs. The vibrant James that you knew was gone, and his soft facial features were changed with the scrunching of his face as agony coursed throughout him. He screamed out as Davy rushed into the tent, throwing down his bag and running his fingers through his already messy hair.
"Davy... what- what's happening?" You choked out, while tears started to spill out of James' eyes, making you want to cry even more. Davy looked at you with glassy eyes, shook his head quietly in response and motioned towards the water. You nodded sharply - he was doing this to try and assure that both James and I would both be okay - and wiped the forming tears in your eyes, picking up the canteen.
"James..." You whispered soothingly into his ear. "I need you to drink this okay?" He groaned, sharp whimpers coming out of his mouth along with his ragged breaths, setting off a fire in your chest, making it difficult for you to focus on the current task. He opened his mouth for you to pour the water in.
You did so in little drops, but even that he coughed and nearly choked on. "P-please." He groaned, punching the earthy ground with his fist, a painful expression clouding his features.
"I know... I know..." You whispered, sobbing quietly next to him as he continued to groan, scream and cry; this also made it all the more difficult for Davy to keep his cool.
"I can't breathe..." He breathed out, back arching off of the ground, chest puffing out as his breaths became shorter and shorter. "I can't breathe... I c...can..." He tried to exhale but it just came out in staggered breaths. He reached out for you, touching your shoulder and cheek while he continued to struggle to breathe. You ran your hand through his sweaty locks and put the other on his chest, trying to get him to calm down.
