Steven's POV
I'm about to head home when my phone (that somehow managed to stay in my pocket during the fight) rang. The ringtone lets me know that it was Connie. I clear my throat a few times before answering so it doesn't seem like I've been crying. The last thing I would want her to do is worry, and on top of that it would make me seem like a baby. I answer Connie and hold the phone up to my ear. "Oh, hey Steven!" Connie says on the other line, sounding slightly surprised. "He-ey" I say as my voice cracks. Well, so much for trying to sound normal. "Whoa, what's going on there with your voice?" she says between giggles. "I'm just a little tired, that's all. What have you been up to today?" I ask, trying to change the subject. "Nothing much, I've just been bored out of my mind for the past hour, I just needed to talk to someone. The silence is driving me insane" she says. "So, what did you do on your mission today?" Crap. I think to myself. I've never been a good liar, and it doesn't help that Connie is practically a mini detective. "Well, it was.. I.. uh... just had to go check on something with the gems. Nothing really important" I lie, trying to sound convincing. "Where did you go?" Connie asks. "I went to.. uh.. some sort of water temple thing. Yeah, a water temple thing." "You mean the one you told me about that you guys destroyed?" How on Earth does she remember that? "Uh, no, it was... a different water temple.. thing." "Okay..." she replies. She probably knows I'm lying by now. "So, anyway," Connie starts, "How has your day been? Other than the water temple thing, of course." "Uh.." is all that I can say as everything starts spinning around me and the world fades to blackness.
Connie's POV
"Steven? Steeeven! STEVEN!!" I shout with a growing amount of concern in my voice. From what I heard on the phone it sounded like he had fainted. He's probably dehydrated from the mission. I think to myself as I flip through my phone to try to find if his location was on. Bingo! His location says... he's in the middle of the Beachfront Nature Reserve, nearly 30 minutes away! Maybe he got lost or something? I think to myself as I grab 3 bottles of water- one for me, Steven, and an extra just in case.
~~TIME SKIP~~
I hop out of the car and quickly thank my mom for driving me before I dart off into the woods to look for Steven. "STEEEEVEN!!" I shout repeatedly. No response. I'm about to give up when I find him unconscious lying on his side, bleeding badly. I have no idea how this happened or what to do, but I have to help. I feel horrible for not being there to help him when it happened. "Steven" I say as a tear falls down my cheek "I'm sorry." I whisper as I dissolve into a pool of my own tears.
