Zane's P.O.V

Black.

Complete, utter darkness.

It covered every inch of my vision leaving me with nothing but fear and confusion.

Why is it so dark?

Where am I?

How did I get here?

The questions swarmed through my head as I drifted through the void of darkness.

I couldn't see even the smallest speck of light. There was no lantern, no candle, no sun, no stars, just... blank.

No color other than black.

Yet... in my minds eye... I can still see her.

She's standing there smiling at me, her eyes filled with glee, her bright smile almost blinding...

And I knew I'd never see that again.

The thought made me choke back a sob. It was easy to tell that I was dead at this point.

Maybe this is the afterlife.

No heaven.

No reincarnation.

No re-living your life.

Just oblivion for all eternity.

I thought that if I died, I'd be with her. But I guess I was wrong. I fought back the tears threatening to escape my eyes as I grit my teeth to prevent any whimpering.

Then, I screamed. It was strange. Mostly because I couldn't hear anything. Then I tried again; screaming so loud that my vocal cords went raw. But again, not a sound.

Why can't I hear anything?

There was no response to my question, so again, I floated around the empty space, drowning in thought.

No matter how hard I squinted or how hard I tried, I couldn't see even a microscopic sliver of light. Then, the realization that this was it, forever, dawned on me.

I'll just drift around for an eternity, wallowing around in sorrow as I only have her memory to keep me company.

I forgot about keeping up my tough guy act as I cried, not caring if I looked like a two year old.

Then, I realized that my right eye hadn't been producing tears.

What the-

Light.

Blinding, white light erupted from seemingly no where, and I could see myself.

I looked down at my hands as pieces of shattered darkness drifted around the seemingly endless sea of white.

"So... I'm not dead..." I said before crumbling to me knees. Then, I woke up.

I gasped as my eyes shot open, and I catapulted forward in shock.

A nurse who had been sitting beside the bed rushed towards me before placing her hands on my right arm and trying to ease me into laying back down.

In response, I ripped my arm from her grasp and swung my legs over the side of the bed to run out of the room. But they seemed stiff, and the second they hit the floor, I crumbled to the ground.
