“Judy and Martin Samson are deemed unfit parents. Ivory Samson is hereby removed from Mr. and Mrs. Samson’s care and placed into foster care.” The courtroom roared in disbelief.

I looked back at my parents. My mother’s head was in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. My father attempted to comfort her, but even he couldn’t hold back his tears.

“Order! Order!” The judge shouted attempting to get control of the courtroom.

A CPS (Child Protective Service) agent attempted to rush me away.

“No!” I screamed. This is all too real. “No! Let me go home!” Tears were flowing down my face.

”Ivory, sweetie, everything will be okay. Just relax. We need to get you out of here.”

“I SAID NO!” I screamed at her at the top of my lungs.

“Ivory! Things will change! You will not speak to your elders that way!” She chastened me as if she was in charge of me. “Officers, I could use some help here.”

A policeman walked up to her. I had no choice now.

I’m leaving my parents. For good.

As we walked out of the courtroom, the press’s cameras flashed at me. Microphones were shoved in my face. “Ms. Samson!”

“Ivory! A statement on the verdict?”

“Get back! Respect her space.” The CPS agent fended off the pushy reporters.

I grabbed the ABC News Reporter’s microphone out of her hand. At first she looked like she was going to fight me for it, but when I brought it to my mouth to speak, she let it go.

“I’m thirteen years old. My brother’s death was a tragic accident, but that’s just what it was. An accident. I’m being taken away from my family because of an accident. Something that was no one’s fault. My parents are not murders. The judicial system has proven that, but for some reason I’m being taken from the people I love.” I spoke just as my mother taught me with grace and maturity.

When I saw my parents walk out of the courtroom behind me, I snapped. “This is total bull! You are all assholes! Those people,” I pointed to my parents. “lost their son and you are taking me away from them as well. You broke my family even worse than it already is. Rot in hell.” I handed the dumbfounded reporter back her mic.

I’m done being a good girl.

If I’m going to be taken away from my family, goddammit I’m going kicking and screaming.
