The Rules

 "Kara, no." Alex said, her voice heavy with exasperation. Her younger sister was hyped up about something that Alex had yet to decipher. For some reason, this meant that Kara kept trying to mess with all of Alex's very sensitive equipment.

"You do know that I was about to be one of the youngest ever inductees to the Kryptonian science guild, right? The technology on my planet is millennia beyond this." Kara rolls her eyes at her concerned sister.

"And yet, I am reminded of that time you couldn't figure out how to change the channel of the tv and threw the remote through a wall." Alex says, her tone simultaneously amused and annoyed.

"I fixed the tv and the wall that day before Eliza even got home. It worked even better that it did before I got a hold of it." Kara stuck her tongue out at her older sister in a rare show of maturity.

"What has gotten into you today, anyway?" Alex looks mildly concerned as she peels her gloves off of her hands and throws them away.

Kara blushes heavily and stutters something that Alex isn't sure that she heard correctly.

"What was that?" Alex's eyebrows shoot up into her hairline.

"I'm going to ask Lena out to dinner tonight... like on a date." Kara says and Alex can understand her younger sister's hesitation to tell her now. The elder Danvers sibling has never been a supporter of any Luthor endeavor, no matter how seemingly well-intentioned. No matter how much Kara had vouched for her or how many times Lena had seemed to prove herself. Alex would not believe in her or get behind Kara's friendship with her.

"Really? Are you going to ask a Luthor out on a date? And you, a Kryptonian. What would your cousin say?" Ales asked.

"Luckily for me, my cousin doesn't get a say in who I do or do not date. Neither do you, for that matter. I am a grown, badass, bulletproof, and self-aware woman. I do not need my family's input." Kara said after having noticed the disapproving look on Alex's face.

Alex watched her sister sweep from the room with a melodramatic flash of her cape. She groaned loudly enough to startle her lab assistant before deciding to call Maggie and see what she thought would be the best course of action. Clearly, Kara's new mission was to implode their lives and ruin everything that Alex had worked for.

James had been mildly concerned when Kara had swept through the DEO lobby and dragged him along with her by the ear. However, it was quite clear that she had been put off by something, and probably needed someone to talk to or blow off steam with or both. When they arrived at the gym, one car and one punching bag each were hanging from the ceiling. In a rare burst of humor, he feigned some jabs at the car.

"This one is for me, right?" he asked, flashing that blinding, toothy smile of his. It didn't make her heart do somersaults anymore, but she still felt her heart swell with affection for him.

"Sure, James. Let's see you knock it out of the park." she said wryly, before shoving her fist right through it.

"Why don't you get started and tell me about whatever it is that's bothering you?" James offered. Kara sighed heavily and ran a hand through her long blonde hair.

"Alex doesn't approve of me asking Lena out." she says softly as James wraps his knuckles.

"Oh, wow. That's definitely not what I had expected." James's eyes go wide.

"I mean, I am an adult woman and I can date whoever I please." Kara growls, landing a side-kick that made the car swing wildly.

"Have you tried to look at it from Alex's perspective though?" James asked cautiously. "You're her little sister in everything except blood. She has dedicated the vast majority of her life to keep you safe and your identity under wraps. You dating anyone especially someone with that particular last name probably goes against every one of those sensibilities. She doesn't know Lena like you do, and she isn't nearly as trusting as you are." James continues even as Kara is going to town on the slowly crumpling car. He trusted her super-hearing to pick up what he was saying
