this did not quite turn out the way i wanted it to, but here it is anyway! enjoy!
Kara didn't know much of anything about guns or weapons; and that often made it very hard to shop for her sister. Ale Danvers was quite possibly the hardest person on Earth to buy Christmas presents for. She had resorted to trying to find some kind of kitschy decorations for the new place that she had gotten with Maggie. She was already pretty fascinated by Earth history and had eaten it all up in high school. Kara had absolutely no idea of what she could possibly do for Alex that she would actually like. She trailed through old LP albums on vinyl and couldn't find any that she knew or thought that Alex might like.
She was entranced by a blue jewel set in what looked to be an antique gold chain when Lena Luthor came in.
"Kara! Hey, what are you looking for?" she asked, walking so smoothly that it looked more like gliding. Kara could actually fly but she still didn't have any idea of how Lena could pull that off.
Kara forgot about the necklace and turned to reply. "I'm trying to find a Christmas present for Alex. She's impossible to shop for and refuses to out and out tell me what she wants. How about you?"
Lena figured that it would be creepy to tell Kara that she had looked her up on Find My Friends.
"Shopping for you, actually. You aren't much easier. It must run in the Danvers family or something." Lena said, amazed by how easily the lie had come to her. She already had one present for Kara, but it was a small thing and she wanted something better for her best friend. "Can I help with the Alex hunt while I'm at it?"
"Feel free. You can't do any worse than I have already done." Kara said with a sigh as she gestured around the small store.
"How does she feel about music?" Lena asked, heading to the records sectioning that Kara had just left.
"She's picky as hell. I just looked at those and didn't find anything I knew that she liked." Kara smiled to herself at Lena's thoughtfulness. It amazed her that people could think that the other woman was evil just because of her name.
"She doesn't strike me as being particularly picky about things like that. Alex seems more like the kind of girl who'll just leave whatever's playing on as background noise... but you definitely know her better than I do." Lena said with a noncommittal shrug.
"Alex isn't the type for a lot of things, but when it comes to music - Alex is a woman of refined tastes. However, she very much hates to impose on anyone. Alex will willingly suffer through country music before she complains to anyone about anything." Kara chuckled to herself. "It's one of the many wonderful little things that make Alex Alex."
Kara had an incredibly fond expression on her face that Lena took a moment to appreciate. She wished that she could have a bond like that with someone. Her half-brother Lex Luthor had been the closest thing and he had become an actual homicidal maniac. Lena knew that what Alex and Kara had was special and sacred. She was honored to admire it from afar.
"And what about you, Kara Danvers? What are your musical preferences?" Lena asked, hoping for ideas of her own.
"It's slightly embarrassing in a way, but I've loved musicals since I was a child. Other than that I picked up a few cues from Alex. She's taught me most of what I know, even though we ended up being very different. Still, the influence remains." Kara said, barely remembering to filter out the part of her that yearned to overshare.
Lena was always perturbed and intrigued by the moments when Kara got like this. It seemed like she had something inside screaming to get out, but the most cautious parts of the other woman wouldn't let her speak. Lena blamed it on being a Luthor... though it wasn't something that she had chosen for herself. Kara was obviously too absorbed in her own thoughts to divulge anymore childhood stories or give her any real ideas for Christmas. She let Kara stew and picked up the necklace and inspected it as well.
It was an antique; something that Lena would never wear herself, but seemed quite suited to Kara. The necklace had a history that neither of them would ever know and Lena knew from experience that it took someone as special as Kara to appreciate that. She waited for Kara to wander out of sight and bought it at asking price just so Kara wouldn't hear. Lena could afford it and it would be worth the look of surprise on her face later on.
She smiled to herself and rejoined Kara, looping her arm through the other woman's with one of her most charming smiles.
"I know a great place to get dinner and we can go over more ideas. If all else fails you can call Maggie, right?" Lena suggested, leading Kara away from the antique weapons collection. The blonde was a horrendous klutz and Lena wouldn't put it past her to wind up in the hospital thanks to some such display.
Kara had been thinking that if all else failed, maybe she could cajole J'onn into just a little bit of mind-reading to figure out what would be best. She was already pretty desperate. Kara just wasn't sure about the moral or ethical aspect of such an escapade.
The sound of Lean's mottled accent brought her back to herself.
"You are thinking so hard that I think I'm getting a second-hand headache. I didn't think that that was physically possible, but you've not failed to surprise me yet." she had been saying.
"I'm sorry, my coffee from this morning must have already run its course or something." Kara apologized.
"It's alright. When you're thinking deeply like that, you get this adorable little crinkle between your eyebrows. I don't get to see it all that often, so I have to take the opportunity to fill my eyes with it when I can." Lena said as casually as though she were commenting on the food.
"Damn Luthor, that was pretty smooth." Kara said with a short and choked laugh. She smiled earnestly then and her blue eyes twinkled...so Lena considered the bold statement a success.
"Do you think you can get out of you own head long enough to tell me what has you so preoccupied?" Lena asked; making Kara blush.
"Sure, just let me make a bathroom run for a minute, okay?" she asked, hearing the sound of smashing glass and a shriek of terror from a bank two streets down. Kara tossed her napkin on the table and took off quickly; leaving an obviously dumbstruck Lena at an absolute loss again.
Some might have been put off by the behavior, but not Lena Luthor. She was stubborn and at some point, Kara Danvers had become one of her favorite people. She would wait, and she would do her absolute best to be patient in the meantime. For now, she had a particularly beautiful antique necklace burning a hole in her pocket, and she figured that she might as well find some earrings or something to match it. Lena was short on people to give her advice, so she dialed Jess to see about the next steps.
