"AARGH!" I roar, as I punch the punching bag that conveniently hangs from my ceiling. Tears well in my eyes but I blink them away. I'm not stupid. I know that Sougo has had other girlfriends before, but why is the one Hijikata stole still so damn important to him? And how can he just drop a bombshell like that without even considering my feelings?
Sure I asked but I was so caught off guard and he didn't even glance my way when he answered that question. Even when I stopped walking, he walked on. Who was this girl that Sougo still pined after? Why doesn't he just go back to her? And why is he dating me if his whole life centers around her?
I slump the ground but not before hurling my boxing gloves at the wall. One would think after all this time of being together, I wouldn't be so damn insecure. But I can't help it. I'm so freakin heads over heels for the stupid sadist that one wrong thing can send me spiraling. When did I become this freakin attached to him?
I peer at myself in the mirror that's perched against my closet door. "What am I missing?" I say as I study my body. My legs are smooth and white, my chest is nothing to sneeze at, my hair is long and glossy, and my skin is clear. Yet why does he continue to live in the past and see this other girl, when I'm right in front of him?
"God I'm so pathetic," I whimper, burying my head in my knees. I should have just asked him who she was to him and why she was so damn important. Instead, I'm home alone, holed up in my room, with a million and one questions and a thousand more insecurities. I whip out my phone and dial my brother. He picks up on the first ring.
"Hey sis what's up?" He asks.
"Um, hey Kamui. Are you busy?" I ask, praying he's not with some girl. I don't think I can stand being alone right now.
I hear a girlish oof and his quick words of "Get out!" before he replies. "Nope. My schedule is clear!" I smile. I was trying to hard to make it so that he wouldn't hear the pain in my voice. But per usual, my brother knows me too well. It's obvious he kicked that woman out just so he could be there for me.
When I was a child, Kamui decided he wanted to go off on his own. He got into trouble and always came home with new injuries. Not wanting to worry our dying mother he left her to my care and vanished for several years.
After many years of failing to connect with him, he finally came around and is doing everything he can to make up for all the years of my life he missed. "Can you come over? Bring Ice cream and pizza. We're gonna have a binge night."
".....Everything ok? I don't need to bring my testicle removing tools do I?"
"NO! Just hurry up."
"Gawd you take the fun out of everything. Be there in a bit. Is there going to be any heart to heart conversations tonight?"
"Nope. You're just gonna come over and the minute you do, I'm turning on the TV. No talking necessary," I say before I hang up. "Really? Testicle removing tools? Why does he even own those?" I say, gaping at at my phone. Something I really don't understand my brother.
The phone rings and the caller ID says Sougo. I debate for about five seconds before picking up. "Hello?"
"Hey, just wanted to make sure you were ok? You were acting kinda weird earlier," he says. No shit Sherlock! You practically told me you were still in love with someone else and because Hijikata stole her from you, you're planning your life around his so that you can take revenge! That's what every girl loves to hear from her boyfriend! NOT!
I don't say any of those things. "Oh yeah, I'm fine. I can't talk though. I'm busy helping Gin-chan. I'll talk to you later. Bye!" I hang up before he can protest. He's such an idiot. I walk down to the living room and turn on the TV.
I browse through the many TV shows that Netflix offers, as I wait for my older brother. The doorbell rings and I hop up and cautiously walk over to the door. I make sure to conceal my presence, wanting to make sure it's Kamui and not Sougo.
Like every other couple, we've had spats, and he always comes my door to make-up. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't buy my lie about being with Gin-chan. But I really am not up to talk to him right now. I peer through the little peep hole and see that my suspicions are correct. Sougo is on the porch looking for my shadow or anything else that would give me away.
He rings the doorbell again, still looking for me. He can't even see my shadow thanks to the door hiding it within it's own shadow. He whips out his phone and I quickly whip mine out and turn it off before he calls it. Damn he's smart!
He calls my number but there's obviously no sound. "Kagura?" he calls.
"Oi! What are you doing here?" Kamui asks as he carries a box of pizza in one hand and ice cream in the other. Sougo narrows his eyes. "So she is home?" Shit! I'm screwed.
"No she's not. I'm borrowing their TV. I have a work conference via Skype and my TV broke and my computer's been down for days. I'm hungry so I was going to eat before I started. Gin asked me to pick up some ice cream as a "thank you." Look I have the house key right here. There ain't nobody home. Move along."
I could kiss and strangle my brother. Now I have to magically lock the door without Sougo hearing it. I press the door hard to the frame and slowly turn the lock. It gives a very soft creak but Sougo hears it. "Kagura! Why are you hiding?" He yells, banging on the door.
"Dude, she's not home!"
"I just heard her lock the damn door!"
"Dude, that was me."
"What?"
Kamui somehow makes the exact same noise without moving. "See? You should get some rest buddy. Midterms are coming up and you obviously are in dire need of rest."
"Why would you make that sound out of the blue?"
"You were watching me as if expecting me to burst into flames or something. So I made a weird little noise to creep you out. Now can you move? I have ten minutes before my meeting starts and I need to hook everything up, eat my pizza, and put the ice cream in the freezer."
"Fine." Sougo moves out of the way and I quickly dart back into the living room and turn the TV and lights off before lighting hopping up the steps and hiding in the upstairs loft, hoping Sougo won't notice my presence.
Kamui opens the door. "See? No one here. Now shoo shoo. I'm a working man boy." Sougo says something under his breath but I can hear him walking away from the house. Kamui shuts the door. I wait for a few more minutes, and Kamui calls, "All clear!" I leap off the banister of the stairs and land gently down next to him.
"That was close. He's ridiculously smarter than I gave him credit for," Kamui sighs.
"Thanks for covering for me." I say.
"No prob. Now lets get this binge eating tv show watching with no heart to heart conversations night on!"
"You got it!"
