Sougo POV

What the hell? Why doesn't Kagura even notice how much I've fallen for her? Why does she think I'm going to drop her all the time? Why would she even think I would dump her over something as minuscule as that?

"Jesus you two. Either you hate each other or you love each other. It's damn near impossible to tell," Ginpachi-sensei says as he leans against the doorframe. I look over at him. "Matako told me what she said. I'm assuming Kagura finally spilled the beans." I nodded. He let out a huge exasperated sigh.

"When Kagura was little, she witnessed a lot of things that no child should ever have to see. But the thing that stuck out to her most was the fact that women who don't bear children are shunned. They're used and abused over and over and she's always been terrified of that happening to her. It's not really you she's scared of. It's the world Sougo. The world is a horrifying place for some people and Kagura is terrified of that. Where'd she go anyway?"

"I don't know. I think she took one look at my face and ran. I think she took it as a slap to the face. I was making a horrified expression because I was horrified that she thought I would cast her away so easily."

"You really are an idiot aren't you?" Ginpachi - sensei said. I nodded. "She probably went home. Let's go fetch that idiot drama queen."

"You're a teacher. You can't just leave," I pointed out.

"Watch me," he said, shrugging off his white lab coat he's so fond of. He wrote "STUDY HALL" on the chalkboard before grabbing his keys. I followed him out to his car. We didn't speak as we drove to his house. I was too busy pondering just how I was going to talk with her without freaking her out.

The minute we pulled int he driveway I knew something was horribly wrong. The door was wide open and nothing but darkness welcomed us. I leapt out of the car, not bothering to wait for sensei.

"Kagura!" I yelled. I ran to the steps and froze. I saw two porcelain legs followed by the rest of my girlfriend. She was deathly pale, her breath shallow. "Kagura?" I asked, cradling her in my lap. "GINPACHI!" I screamed and he was there. He checked her pulse before grabbing her in his arms. We raced back out to the car and he practically shoved her in my lap before he peeled out of the driveway.

We raced into the hospital where she was quickly placed into surgery. Apparently her appendix had burst. Since we found her, they were able to save her life, but because she had been alone for too long she was in a coma (Author-san here. Again, I am not a doctor. I do not know how medically sound this is).

"We can't say she's out of the clear yet but I am hopeful that she will wake up in a day or so. But....which one of you is her guardian?" The doctor asked looking at the both of us.

"I am." Ginpachi-sensei said. The doctor nodded and took him to another room. Fear clenched my gut as I saw my precious redheaded fireball, in the hospital bed. Just an hour or so ago we were racing through the halls, having a great day. How did everything turn so sour so fast?

Ginpachi returned, his face ashen. "Ginpachi?" I asked nervously. He took a deep breath and ran his fingers through his unruly white hair. "Something went wrong when they operated on her. They don't really understand it themselves, but her lung collapsed. They managed to fix it, but they think it best if she get a lung transplant. However if she does that, her life expectancy will definitely go down. They're not sure if it's better to keep this one, or put her on a waiting list for a new one."

"How the hell does a lung collapse from this?"

"Well to be honest, they think it wasn't really caused by the procedure. But rather she just has a weak lung and it's been like that for a while."

I was frozen. Neither of Kagura's options looked good. I looked back to her sleeping form. She looked so peaceful. That look she had given me when she saw my reaction was seared into my mind. I wish to god, I could turn back the clock and change everything about that moment. I should have tried to act different, should have tried to act more compassionate. God I'm so stupid sometimes.

I pressed my hand to the glass wall that separated me from her and asked in a coarse voice, "Are we allowed to sit by her?"

"Yes."

I walked into the room and pulled up the chair. I gently ran my fingers through her hair and made sure there was none on her face, knowing she hated that. The room was too hot, so I turned the temperature down, knowing she was weak to heat.  I sat by her and whispered, "Wake up Kagura. I promise I'll fix everything if you just wake up." Unfortunately, no movie magic came along to make her open her eyes at that, so I opened my backpack and took out the book, she and I had been reading together.

"How dare you end up in the hospital to get out of reading." I tried to laugh, but it was hard. I thumbed to the page we were on, placed my hand on top of hers and began to read, hoping she could hear me. I hate re-reading.
