I sat in the passenger seat of the police car with Inspector Adkins. I leaned my head against the car window, watching all the buildings and people on the street move out of view as the car went pass them all. I was so tired already, it was almost 2 in the afternoon now. My head was pounding and I felt so dead as the pain from some of my wounds started to really kick in. I tried my best to be relaxed and not focus on the pain. But that only lead me to realize how hungry I was.
'Hopefully Worick and Nicolas have something I can snack on till I get home.' I thought to myself as I continued to look out the window. I tried to think about what Worick meant by he could help me out with getting a new job. A small part of me was scared, but the majority really trusted him. For some reason, I really trusted both these men. But I guess being that most of my life, I've lived not knowing who would help me, who would take care of me, and who would be willing to, I couldn't really be picky.
For the most part, they just seemed like nice guys. Intimidating, but with their line of work, that was probably a good thing. I doubt the people who chose to fuck with them ever tried them again, especially after the ass beating they would probably receive from them.
I was pulled away from my thoughts when I noticed the car had stopped moving and we were back on the familiar street where the two men lived. "Try to not get into any trouble kid. We'll let you know if anything comes up about the case." I nodded at the inspector's words and opened the passenger side door and exited the car. I then started to walk towards the building and then up the stairs to face the door way I head seen earlier.
I knocked at the door and waited for someone to answer. I then remember Nicolas couldn't hear, so I jumped up and down, hoping he would feel the vibration in the floor.
I stopped jumping once I heard the door unlock. As I had suspected, Nicolas felt the vibration coming from the floor and opened the door.
"I'm sorry about that." I said, a little embarassed about the fact I was jumping up and down outside their door.
"It's fine, come in." Nicolas said as he turned his back to walk back into the room. I followed behind, closing the door behind me. Nicolas threw himself back into the green couch and looked over to me. I was still standing at the opposite side of the room near the door. He pointed to the spot next to him on the couch, I guess indicating me to sit there. I walked over, put my backpack on the floor, and sat next to him. Not too close, enough where there was space between us.
He picked up a book off the small wooden coffee table and opened it up to read. I sat there for a moment just messing with my thumbs when I realize Worick wasn't here. I was about to tap Nicolas on the shoulder but something stopped me, and I just looked at him. I don't really know what drew me to him at first, whether it was his looks, his confidence that radidatted off of him, or the fact that, I couldn't read him. Every time I saw him though, I was just in awe of him.
Worick was a simple kind of man to read. You could tell he was a charmer, a man who enjoyed the attention of women, and the kind of guy who liked to get his hands dirty, in both a professional and sexual way.
With Nicolas, it was hard. I couldn't get anything from him. I was usually able to read people very easily. A lot of reading people is based on their actions, speech, how they presented themselves to certain people, facial expressions, or movements. But with Nicolas, everything he did, how he presented himself, was foreign. Like the language of people I spent time learning over the years, was now being spoken to me in a new language.
Whenever I felt like I could see something I understood, I second guessed it. I was taken from my thoughts when I heard him speak. Of course I didn't hear a thing he said, being that I was obversing him way too much to hear anything.
"What? I'm sorry." I said, embarassed of myself. He chuckled to himself, or at least I think it was a chuckle, and repeated himself.
"Do you usually s-stare at strangers you m-meet?" He asked, grinning slightly. My eyes grew wide and I felt my cheeks turn red. I brushed some of my behind my right ear as I took a moment before speaking.
"Sorry. Maybe I'll come back tomorrow when Worick isn't busy or something." I was about to get up when I felt Nicolas pull me back down on to the couch. He pulled me a little too hard though and I ended up falling into his lap, my hands on his chest to support myself up. I didn't even realize how we were till I looked him in the eyes and saw that our faces were very close.
"Damn Nico, should I leave?" I looked up over Nicolas' shoulder and saw Worick with laughing, with a huge smile on his face.
I got off Nicolas as fast as I could. "It wasn't like that I fell!" I shouted, embarrassed, and turning red.
"Relax, I'm messing around. Sorry I made you wait, ran out a cigarettes, went to pick some up." He said, lifting up the carton of cigarettes he was holding at his side.
"It's fine." I said messing with my fingers and looking down to the floor.
I looked up to see Nicolas sign something to Worick.
"Oh yeah," he turned to me to continue. "Me and Nico do some interesting line of work as you know. The man you met earlier today, Dr. Theo, he helps out people like us, and he's been thinking about hiring another assistant to help him and his assistant Nina out. You'll get paid a little more, but it won't be every week like you're used to. If you want it, give him a call." Worick then handed me a piece of paper with the doctor's name, the address of the clinic, and the number.
"Thank you both, you didn't have to do this for me."
"Hey, we've been on the other end of the 'no money' stick, it sucks, least we can do is help after the shit night yesterday and the hectic morning today."
I was about to say thank you again, when my stomach made a loud growling sound.
"You haven't eaten all day have you?" Worick said with a grin.
I looked down at the floor as I turned red. I then felt an arm wrap around my shoulders and looked up to see Worick.
"Let's go get something to eat. Our treat." Worick said. I saw that he had picked up my bag and tossed it over his shoulder. "Come on, after we eat we'll make sure you get home alright." Worick said with a smile.
I turned to see Nicolas walk over to a corner of the room where his sword rested against the wall. He picked it up and hooked it to his hip.
Nicolas was the first to walk out the door, then me and Worick, Worick stopped to look through his pockets for his keys to lock the door. I walked down the stairs and saw Nicolas waiting for us. I was about to apologize when he slowly started to sign for me. He finished his signing and gave me a small smile and started to walk ahead.
I turned around to see Worick with a smile on his face.
"What did he say?" I asked. Worick wrapped his arm around my shoulders as we started to walk forward, and told me something I total wasn't prepared for. "He said 'Don't worry, it's not often I get stared at by cute women'."
As soon as the words left his mouth, my face felt like fire.
