Me and Nina started to head back to the clinic after running around all over the city to deliver medication for people. As we dropped off medication, I noticed that many of the doctor's patients, were tags. Some were young children who seemed to have no parents, and others were small families and couples who could not afford the celebrer tags needed to take. Nina, after the first three stops explained to me that the doctor helped tags because he was the only doctor that would. Out of all the hospitals and doctors offices in the city, this small clinic doctor was the only real person who would help these people that had nothing. I had heard often in the news that the prices of the drug kept going up and that it was becoming harder for people to purchase the medication.
People were so cruel. I hated that the world we lived in was filled with so much hate. These people didn't ask to be the way they were. Treating them the way people did was completely unnecessary, no amount of insults could change who they are.
As we headed back, Nina and I got to take some time to get to know each other. I found out that she was twelve years old, that she wanted to be a doctor when she gets older, hence her working with Dr. Theo part time. She also told me that she worked very hard in school and that she didn't have too many friends but she didn't mind. Nina explained to me her home situation, telling me that both her parents gave her to her grandma when she was a baby, and that she spends her time trading off from staying with Dr. Theo and staying with her grandma. She was very mature for her age and seemed like she was raised well.
I told her that I was raised by my brother and "grandmother". I felt it was important for her to know I understood her in away. I didn't tell her what my brother was into that fucked up his life, I also strayed away from questions about my parents. I didn't remember much about them, but I remember the night they were murdered. I watched it happen from a small closet in the living space of the small house we lived in. It was the kind with the shutters. My brother holding me in his arms and covering my mouth to keep me from breathing to loud or screaming. I shook my head trying to push the memory far from my mind.
We changed the topic to favorite colors and books and things when I heard a man yell in my direction. Shouldn't have taken this short cut.
"Hey hot stuff, why don't you ditch the kid and come hangout with us?" He said pointing to his two friends standing next to him. The three of them laughing and smirking. Gross.
The three of them looked like your basic old guy creeps. All three of them had to be in their mid to late forties. I rolled my eyes and pushed Nina to walk in front of me. However, they didn't want to be ignored.
"Hey! Lady, I'm talkin' to ya." He said, him and his friends following in behind us. I tapped Nina's shoulder to have her walk a little further ahead of me. I didn't want her near me if they tried to grab me. I wanted her to at least get a good head start to run off if need be.
"Whore, I'm talkin' to ya, don't fucking ignore me!" He yelled, clearly angry.
"Look, leave me alone, I'm not interested!" I yelled back, never looking behind me. I then felt someone grab my shoulder and pull me back, making me lose balance and falling on my ass. The man and his friend surrounded me. Laughing. He then grabbed me by my hair, which made me yelp in pain.
"Ever!" Nina shouted, worry in her voice.
"Nina it's okay, go, I'll be okay." I told her, trying to get her to run away, but part of me knew that she would refuse.
"Kid, if I was you, I'd do what your mommy says, you don't wanna get hurt do ya?" The man holding me by my hair asked her. She stepped back, clearly terrified.
The man then pulled me up to his face by my hair. "You know it's rude to ignore someone when they're talkin' to ya, right hun?" He asked me, his rancid breathe making me want to vomit. I was about to talk back to the asshole, when we heard the click of gun being cocked.
"I'm gonna give you to the count of ten to let the young lady go, before I have to put a bullet in the back of your head." That voice, it was Worick's.
The man, still holding me by my hair, turned to face Worick. He then tossed me in Worick's direction, making me hit the ground really hard, making my injuries from the other night ache in such a terrible pain. I groaned trying to stand up but heard a loud gun shot. The man screamed out in pain. He had been shot in the leg.
"That wasn't very nice. Apologize to the young lady." Worick said, getting ready to shoot him again.
"Fuck you."
Another shot went off and he screamed again. The man's two friends stood there in shock, unable to move or say anything.
"Last chance." Worick said with a smirk.
The man didn't even get to say anything before Nicolas came out from behind the group of men, slamming the guy's two friends into the ground and angling his sword's sharp side of the blade against the guy's neck. It happened all so fast, it took me a second to fully understand what I just saw.
"Say sorry to the young lady." Worick said once again, with a smirk on his face.
"I-I'm s-s-sorry miss." The guy stuttered.
"See? Was that so hard." Worick asked before shooting him and his two friends in the head.
Nicolas came over to me as he but his sword back in its sheath. He then helped me up as I saw Nina running towards us.
She hugged Nicolas and I stood there in shock. "Thank you Nico."
Nicolas russeled her hair and looked to me. Worick soon came over to us asking me if I was alright. I nodded still in shock. They walked us back to the clinic and I didn't bother to talk to Worick about those guys he had left back in the small alleyway.
I couldn't believe all this had happened in such a short time. I sat in the back of the clinic, trying to adjust to everything that had just happened. Nicolas then came over and looked at me. I probably looked like a mess.
"Thank you and Worick for saving me, again." I said. I rubbed my tired face with my hands and then I heard him speak.
"No more thank yous. "
I looked at him and he smiled a little at me. I smiled back. He then leaned down and kissed my hair. It felt nice to have people who cared about me again and for some reason, I felt even safer knowing they were here for me, he was he for me.
