Tessa's POV
Jamie went in the kitchen with Josh and Krystal was in there. I approached my dad.
"Hey, dad," I said dully.
Dad looked at me. "Yes, Tessie," he said. I hate when he called me 'Tessie'. "I wanted to speak with you."
"I also need to speak with you," I told him. "You go first."
"Tessa, I know we don't really have a good father-daughter relationship and I want to know why."
"I wanted to speak to you about that too," I said. I was trying to avoid the question but I'll have to answer it soon.
"Good but I'd like to know why."
"Dad... you were never there for me. Never came my graduation or award ceremony. Hardly ever came home for Christmas, I'm surprised you even came home. When are you leaving? Tomorrow? Tonight? You were not there for any of my birthdays or Josh's. All you care about is work! Work! Suddenly you care about our father-daughter relationship," I said. "The truth is I learned to live without a father and the only reason I'm speaking to you about this is because Josh will buy me a television if I do." I looked in the kitchen and saw Jamie and Krystal sitting by the table eating my mom's cherry pie and Josh and mom standing by the kitchen's doorway looking at dad and I. Mom walked to us.
"Tessa, stop," she warned me.
"No, I think she should continue," dad said to mom.
"Fine put yourself through that pain," mom muttered.
"Tessa, I'm sorry for all those times."
"Ever heard the song Apologize by One Republic?" Then I started singing the chorus.
"Tessa," my mother warned again.
"Josh, come," dad said and Josh came. "I'm sorry Tessa and Josh for never being a good father and, Trisha, a good husband. I have to let you know why I'm here," he paused. "I have to do surgery." I was not expecting that.
"Why?" mom asked.
"I got in an accident some days ago and it wasn't a big-"
"Why didn't you tell us?" Josh asked. I was too shocked to even move.
"I didn't want you guys to panic. However I hit myself pretty hard and the doctor said that I developed internal bleeding in my spleen. The doctor gave me a letter to come to do surgery and tomorrow is the only day I can do it. Some people don't survive the surgery and I want to spend time with all of you so I made reservations for 6 people at 7 tonight so Jamie and Krystal can come." It was so heart breaking to see tears run down my mother's eyes as she hugged dad. I understand how she felt knowing that tomorrow her husband may die. I felt a weight in my heart knowing that because of a stupid grudge, I didn't get to spend time with my dad and now he might die tomorrow. I walked in the kitchen and went to Jamie who was sitting by the table on his phone playing a game. I sat on his lap and he looked at me and frowned.
"What's wrong?" he asked and I told him but I left out how guilty I felt. He looked at me and put his arms around me. "I know you feel bad about the grudge you held on your dad," he said.
"I don't feel guilty about that," I lied.
"Yes, you do."
"No," I denied.
"Tessa, I know you feel bad," Jamie told me. "Don't you?"
"Fine, I feel so bad. If it wasn't for the grudge, I would have gotten to spend time with him. Oh and my dad wants us to come to dinner at 7 tonight."
"Tonight? At 7...?" he passed his hands through his hair.
"What?"
"Uh... my mom wanted to meet you tonight at dinner for 7..."
"Well I could meet her another time right?"
"Yeah, I should probably go home..."
"You're going home?"
"Yeah, you cant expect me to stay here and go to the restaurant looking like this?" he laughed and gestured at himself.
"Actually I wanted to spend time with you alone," I admitted softly. He rested his head on my shoulders. "It's just 45 minutes past 5."
"I'll stay until 6 then I'll come back so you guys can direct me to the restaurant." I did a happy dance and he laughed. I went in the fridge, took out a Coca Cola and sat back on Jamie's lap and drank it.
"Tessa, I wanted to ask you an important question," he said.
"Go ahead."
"You know I don't live in New York?"
"Uh... yes?" How could I not know that?
"Right and well ..." His voice trailed off. I took a sip of the coke. "Well I thought that when I go back to London, you'll come and live with me." I literally spit out the coke that was in my mouth and, unfortunately, I spit it out on the person who now came in the kitchen which happened to be Josh. Josh groaned.
"Don't you know to swallow the drink?!" Josh asked as he tried to get the coke stains out his white t-shirt.
"Josh, I'm so sorry," I apologised. I was so shocked that Jamie asked that. Josh went out the kitchen and I turned to Jamie. "Jamie, I really don't know..."
He looked at me, hold my waist and pulled me closer to him. "I don't mean right now. In the future."
"Yeah... in the future we'll see." He smiled.
"What?"
"It might be nice having a little Jamie or Tessa running around the house." It's a good thing I wasn't drinking coke this time.
"Jamie, slow down buddy," I laughed.
"It's just a thought and not right now like years later."
"Yeah, that'd be cool," I agreed.
"Anyway I'm leaving see you in a bit," he said and left the house. I better go get dressed.
~~~~~~~~~
Josh, Krystal, mom, dad, Jamie and I were in the parking lot and we were now getting ready to go inside the restaurant until somebody called Jamie.
"Hey, well look who it is, looking so gay in that pants." When Jamie looked back, he ducked in time as a plastic bottle nearly hit his head. Then Jamie broke off in a run and I took off my heels and ran behind him. Josh took off running behind me. Krystal, mom and dad looked at all of us in confusion as we ran behind Jamie.
"Jamie, don't!" I shouted as I ran behind him with Josh yelling, too.
"Jamie, stop!" Josh yelled.
