After the fourth day, they stopped sharing glances, and that single removal of contact hurt more than he'd have originally thought.
Had she found someone, if she hadn't already? Did she decide he wasn't worth the glance? He wouldn't blame her for coming to that conclusion; he'd quit looking in the mirror years ago on the day his world paled to gray.
He didn't understand that she was trying to resist coming over, trying to avoid bothering him.
Neither understood how much they really wanted to speak, but a special fear still kept them apart.
