"You see that girl down there?" The older man spoke to me as he pointed to the small child in the parking lot of the hospital, "She's coming to see me today.""Is that so?" I responded as I continued to watch the girl. Smiling and waving for her mother to hurry along. Unlike the general mood of the hospital, she seemed to be joyful and full of life.
"Yes." He told me with a small laugh, "That's my grandbahy. Isn't she pretty?"
I gave a small smile as she ran out of our sight, probably in the direction of the hospital door, "She seems precious Mr.Davis."
He gave a laugh that soon turned into a violent cough and I frowned before gently patting him on the back. He held up a hand as he began to calm, "I'm alright Dean."
"You sure?" I questioned, "I can call a nurse... they can bring you some water."
He shook his head as he gave another cough, "I'm fine, son... Ah, there's my Nikki."
I turned my head back towards windows to see a woman with a baby on her hip and a tired look on her face.
"That your daughter Nikki?" I asked him and he nodded.
"Yes." He said with another beaming smile, "She's pretty isn't she? She may look mean but she's good at heart, just like her old man. Is that how your Nikki is?"
I frowned for a moment before nodded, "A little bit, but she's not mean. She's like an angel. She's my sunshine."
He smiled and began to open his mouth, but was quickly cut off by the voice of one of the nurses.
"Mr.Davis." She told him as she began to walk over to us, "Your daughter is here to see you. Let's get you back to your room."
He smiled at her statement before turned to me, "I've to go Dean. But I'll see you around, right?"
I gave him a small smile, "Of course Mr.D. I'll be right here waiting for you."
He gave me another smile before the nurse wheeled him back down the hallway. A small frown appearing on my face again as he left.
"I hope you're here tomorrow big guy..." I mumbled with a sigh as I continued to stare out the window.
'I gotta get out of here.' I mumbled in my head as I watched the cars travel on the freeway in the distance.
"Done with your daily conversation with Mr.Davis?" I heard a voice ask and I simply shrugged as I continued to stare out the window.
"His daughter came to see him again." I responded, "He had to go."
"I thought she came to see him yesterday?" He responded.
"He doesn't remember that." I mumbled, "He doesn't remember anything that happened 24 hours before hand. He's getting worse Ro. Nothing we can do about it."
He said nothing for a moment, then sighed, "Want me to take you back to your room? I can wheel you back or you can walk back and I'll tell the nurses that you already did your daily exercises for the day."
I thought for a moment before sighing, "Yeah... I wanna walk."
"Alright.." he said and I soon heard his footsteps walking towards me, seeing him next to me moments later, "Need help up?"
I shook my head, "I got it."
I sat for a moment before giving a huff and moving towards the edge of my wheel chair and slowly rising.
I grunted and plopped back down at the numbness I felt in my legs, "Shit."
"Sure you don't need help?" Roman asked again and I waved him off.
"I got it." I mumbled again before repeating the process, only this time, I was able to stand, "Told you I can do it."
He gave a small laugh as he placed his hands on my wheelchair, "Get to stepping Ambrose. I'm right behind you if you need help."
I gave a small nod as I watched my right foot slowly step forwards, then my left, the right again.
"It'd be nice if I could actually move faster." I mumbled as I slowly stepped down the hall.
"Take it slow, Dean." He assured me as he rolled my wheel chair behind me, "You're doing fine. Just concentrate."
I huffed and continued down the hall, feeling beads of sweat form on my forehead as continued towards my room.
It took minutes before I actually reached my room, but I eventually make it. I hung onto the door for a moment before entering.
"Hey you're back." I heard a voice comment and I rolled my eyes, "Roman I was- oh, Dean! Hey. Need help?"
"No." I mumbled as I stepped towards my bed, sighing in relief once I finally reached it, "I'm good Seth."
"He walked all the way from the window at the end of the hall." Roman told Seth proudly.
"You say that like it's a good thing." I mumbled as I sat on the uncomfortable bed.
"It is a good thing." Seth told me, "You couldn't even talk right at first, man. Now you're walking. You're doing great Dean. You'll be making your comeback in no time."
Roman raised a hand, "That's a while from now... I don't want you to rush anything Dean. You don't have to wrestle again if you don't want. That's your decision."
I was quiet for a moment before shrugging, "Maybe... I don't know right now. If Nikki wants to return then we will. If not, I just want to be with her."
Roman and Seth exchanged a glance and I sighed to myself.
"She's not up yet, is she?" I asked softly.
Roman shook his head, "I haven't heard anything about her waking up."
I shook my head as I looked down at the tiled floor of the room.
"It's been four months. How did I wake up so fast and she didn't?"
"I don't know Dean." Roman said with a sigh, "She hit her head pretty hard... She's going to be fine. She needs time."
"All she's has is time." I mumbled, "Why is she taking so long? Something must be wrong."
"She's ok Dean." Seth told me, "I went in and saw her last week. She's fine I promise."
I remained quiet for a moment before looking at him, "Can I go see her?"
"I don't think that's for the best right now Dean." Roman quickly told me, "Maybe when she wakes up."
"I haven't seen her in four months!" I shot at him, "I need to see her. Just let me go see her!"
"Dean calm down." He told me, then sighed, "I know you miss her. But I just don't think seeing her like that is going to do you any good. There will be a time and place to see her. I promise."
I stayed silent and kept my eyes trained on the floor.
"I should have died." I mumbled.
"Dean-"
"Because this life isn't worth living." I mumbled again before laying down on the bed, turning my back towards them and shutting my eyes to keep my tears from spilling over them.
